Most but not all., it still remains an interesting “What if”
I think it possible that the legend could either be a piece of anti catholic propaganda, or the abject fear that catholics have for women.
Any mention of Joan would have been thoroughly eradicated by the Christians and dates changed to suit the narrative that no trace would remain, the only hint being the chair to check the popes dangly bits.
Makes you wonder what the Christians fear women so much. Original sin, Eve and the apple, weak women and all that?
I doubt it, even back then they were not stupid.
Or, the early christians were unable to compete with the cult of the goddess Isis which was widespread at the time, a goddess who was recognized as Venus to the Romans and Aphrodite to the Greeks.
Isis, the wife of Osiris who gave birth to Horus who then fought against Seth.
The analogy to the christian Jesus and his arch enemy Satan is too close to be coincidental. So what did the early christians get around this?
Demoted Isis to a human and connected Horus to Jesus. This is one of the things that bugs me about christianinty. It is not a god given or designed religion but one that has cherry picked the best bits of other religions and called it a day.
where did I read, that the Nostradamus followers feared a black pope, because there was something that referred to him as the one before the big war? … (N.B no, I don’t believe in that, just read it somewhere)
The Catholic Church has a complicate relationship with divination.
On one hand, the Book of Revelation is totally OK in the new testament in spite of being full of prophecies. Heck, all these guys are “certified” prophets: Prophets in Christianity - Wikipedia
On the other hand, any person who is not on this list but also makes guesses about the future was regarded as a heretic witch and was treated accordingly. The Church/Vatican/Papal States disqualified the ideas of Nostradamus as “against the Church”. So, technically any catholic believer should reject Nostradamus.
Historically, the timing of the publishing was perfect for Nostradamus. Martin Luther, Jean Calvin, and the changes they triggered were bigger worries for prosecutors than whatever an astrologer said. So, no persecution of Nostradamus because the world was burning at the time.
Thing is, with Trump and his uncanny ability to cosplay a crackhead, it would be totally plausible that the statement came from him.
