Homeopathy: Placebo or Real

No question: Your wife by a land slide!!

Let me just clarify my standing on vaccination: PRO PRO PRO!!!

My child has had and will have everything that the W.H.O says she should get and then some, and I get frustrated with people who dont inoculate their children.... its all or nothing

As I said, homeopathy has its place and disease control vaccinations is not one of them.

Its just that some people are fanatics when it comes to alternative medicines, I am not one of them, I strongly believe that they both have their place in the world of medicine.

This is why I would class it in the same way as religion and placebo. I play the lottery because I believe that one day I will win.

I have no real feelings of hatred towards homeopathy, but I really have a problem with people that use it on children in place of conventional medicine.

Just to clarify. I do not understand how it could possibly work, so I am a sceptic. It clearly works for some people, but then again simply praying works for others. So maybe some people have the capacity to trust these remedies to such an extent that it actually triggers their own defence mechanism. This is what I find interesting.

Sorry Mikey, but it seems that you only read what you wanted to read, let me put it simpler: Homeopathy = they use part of the "thingy" that causes the sypmtoms to treat the problem.... much like regular diseas vaccinations.

I repeat: "As I said, homeopathy has its place and disease control vaccinations is not one of them.

Its just that some people are fanatics when it comes to alternative medicines, I am not one of them, I strongly believe that they both have their place in the world of medicine"

I whole heartedly agree that parents who allow their kids to suffer unnesesarily for the sake of alternative medicine make me mad too, but not ever case is like that I hope you can agree.

You play the lottery?.... sucker!!

I think the issue here is that that "thingy" is one molecule in every 5th pill. But sure, if you swallow 15 pills you probably gets 3 molecules of that "thingy" into your body where it will do wonders :-)

I am no homeopath... but if you say so

And a sceptic like myself would say: of course it doesn't affect breastfeading as there isn't anything there to get affected by! :-)

No such thing happens according to a BBC article (based on scientific research). Praying or positive thinking won't cure any illness

Dissagree of coarse.... but funny

I think you missed what I had highlighted. " Homeopathy is based on a theory ....." and "Hanemann believed that ....." . So it's a theory that quite a few people believe in. I don't I'm afraid, which is maybe why it wouldn't work for me. I did read the rest and a few of the articles and I'm just not convinced that such a small (and in some cases non-existent) amount would have any effect.

I agree that not everyone who believes in alternative medicine abuses their child in this way and that there are always going to be a few nutters who will. Glad you're not one of them.

I personally trust in the power of vaccination and my son has a complete set. In fact, I was under the impression that it was more or less compulsory and I was surprised to find that such a large number opt out.

Playing the lottery is my belief system

Really? I'd be interested in the link if you have it.

I have to admit (Begrudgingly ) that I see your point, it is just easier for me to be a "believer" as I have seen it work on my 10month old....who by the way has a doctors appointment this afternoon (Like I said, it works, just not all the time and not always to the extent that we want it to work), I try to avoid antibiotics but will not let my girl suffer because of it.

Oh, another point, people often think of alternative medicine as magical cures but it is far from that, my doctor once described it as an aid to CM, I think thats fair... best of both!

Rock, paper, scissors is my belief system

Can't find it. I read it more than 6 months ago

"Legal evidence" and "scientific evidence" really don't have a lot in common - and both of them are different again to the colloquial meaning of "evidence".

blah, blah, blah, rant, rant, rant, yes it is ... no it isn't I tell you ... liar liar pants on fire ...

can we close the thread now ?

Think of all the progress that conventional medecine has made since Hahnemann and Kent wrote their books on homeopathy. Contrast this with homeopathy that has not made any progress (unless I'm mistaken). It still relies on the sacred texts of its founders. Thus it has the characteristics of a religion and not a science.

My wife is a mine of homeopathic wisdom. I think it's unfounded rubbish (I grant that homepathic doctors actually care about their patients, which makes a nice change from most of the conventional ones), but I still take the pills. Mostly because if I don't and the symptoms continue I get lots grief. On the other hand I also bear in mind this story from the great physicist Neils Bohr:

A friend visiting him was surprised to see a horseshoe hanging on the wall. "Do you believe in that sort of stuff, then?" asked the friend.

"No of course not, but I didn't know that you had to believe in it for it to work" replied Bohr...

I would put homeopathy in the same strange realm as reflexology and ear candling. Use it if you believe that it's going to do you some good, but CM is the way to go IMHO.

Also, Prince Charles uses only homeopathy I think and he's virtually certifiable

Another also, what are those little amber necklace things that children wear, I think it was explained to me that they are worn to help teething. Can anyone confirm this

Yes, it is a traditional Swiss belief that amber helps teething babies.

"An amber teething necklace is a traditional baby teething remedy. Wearing Baltic amber close to the skin will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs. The natural anti-inflamitory and pain relieving properties of baltic amber are perfect to soothe teething babies. These necklaces are made from warm Baltic amber beads, when used as Teething Necklaces they are cooling and soothing."

Hmmmmmm..... I am not convinced! (But maybe thats just because I have just gone through a whole weekend with a teething child, all I can say is thank goodness for Panado!)

We were given 1 of these necklaces for my daughter, and it did nothing to help. Good old bonjela from the uk worked a treat .
