I was wondering if anyone has tried horse meat? There's a horse meat butchers up the road from me & i'm wondering if it's worth trying and if so, what cut should I go for? How should I cook it, etc... I'd like to hear from anyone who's tried it and what recipe they'd recommend.
The friendly owner of a Luzern restaurant tried to shock this American by offering up the cheval steak. It backfired when I said "Yes indeed; Cooked medium, please."

I am with you on this, i could NEVER eat horse meat, i have been riding since i was 4 years old. A few years ago we was invited to friends for a BBQ, and i was reading the wrapper on the meat, and it said horse meat i refused to eat it, nipped downstairs, and brought a bratwurst up for the grill
I love horse meat but cant cook it! it always ends up like ruber (aparantly it has to be done slow on low heat or something?)so my swiss boyfriend does the horse steak cooking .i would say not that diffrent from beef but alot more juicey .
Go for a steak, cook it like a beef steak. As for taste, the meat is slightly darker than beef, slightly sweeter than beef and a touch less fat. You could very easily confuse it with a good beef steak, if you didn't know it was horse you would easily assume it was beef.
Now cat is like rabbit, the only realy differenc is one has round rib bones and the other flat rib bones but i can't remember which is which and dog is usualy eaten quite spicy and so it's difficult to really define a taste; a darkish meat a bit like game...yum yum !
Horse-meat is low in fat, cholesterol and sodium and high in iron compared to beef. Do not be put off by its dense bright red colour. This comes from the high iron-rich myoglobin content in the muscle fibres.
I tried it once with all the trimmings of a traditional Sunday roast and was not impressed with the taste. Personally I will stick to Beef or Chicken but only on taste grounds.
Don't really see the argument of not eating Horse meat if you eat other animals, you either like the taste or not...
If I could find a chicken big enough to ride maybe it wouldn't be my favorite meat anymore, but I doubt it
Agreed i spend five days aweek riding and caring for horses but doesnt stop me eating them .And if they is a knacker at least it goes to the butcher and is not just killed so in my opinion nothing is wasted .
Kangaroo is delicios too. - I only tried it once many years ago, but remember it as beig fantastic.
Crocodile looks and tastes like chicken, but more fatty than chicken. I tried it, it was expensive, and it was not good enough, that I would eat it again.
