hot dog versus wienerli

Ok, can someone enlighten me....what is the difference between a hot dog and a wienerli?? sorry not sure how to spell that one...

I have ordered both at badis recently and can neither taste nor see any difference - there must be something as so many places sell both.

Obviously not a haute cusine question, but my kids like them so I'd rather like to know the difference....

Jo

I love your haute cuisine question "Wienerli" is the thing in the hot dog - as the translation says: Viennese sausage.

And to enlighten you further: We Swiss either order "Wienerli mit Brot" (Viennese sausage wit a slice of bread - or better: Büürli) or hot dog (in this case, the Viennese sausage comes in a longish kind of roll). For more sophisticated gastronomical answers, I suggest to attend http://www.ehl.edu/eng ;-)

thanks for that - am I reading right that the only difference is the way it is served?

I have found that the closest thing to a Hebrew National hot dog is Migros' "oriental" , "spicy" beef sausages. If you are looking for it, the package bears a silhouette of what looks like Istanbul's blue mosque

Missing Grey's Papaya...

Wien is Vienna, where they speak German. Hence, Wiener with the diminutive li means the sausage meat product. The Wieners wouldn't say "Hot Dog", until it came into international parlance.

As posted above, it's the presentation. Personally, I find a Wienerli mit Brot looks kinda sad on a plate. Go for the Dog, and ask for onions, just to see the grill guy's expression change

The skin, wienerliis have a tougher skin than hot dogs do. Even the hot dogs here have tougher skins than the ones in the States do.

Yes for Switzerland - no for the States where a hot dog (the sausage) is somewhat different. Bon appétit at the Badi anyway

Wienerli inside Brot = Swiss hot dog.

Wow, fast food that you have to chew rather than simply inhale!? The new paradigm!

I think that the ratio of eye-balls to ar5e-holes is slightly higher in a wienerli than in a hot dog.

Cheers

Jim

Thanks all - guess that is why I could not see any difference!

Thanks for solving my huge gastronomical problems!

hot dog versus wienerli versus frankfurterli

it should have read actually

I hoped this one woulnd't come up...! Now, as the chaos is complete, please try to explain the difference between Wienerli and Frankfurterli. This will for sure keep us busy over the weekend

Funny enough I'll be in Frankfurt in a couple days. I bet, should I have cravings for a hot dog, I'll get one with a Frankfurter in it

Ibeg yor pardon

well yes, I give it a try, just to see whether I don't actually prefer a juicy Wiener

Speaking of hotdogs...

Chestnut chows down 68 hot dogs; sets record

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Setting a world record, Joey Chestnut won Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Saturday, solidifying himself to many as the greatest gustatory athlete of all time.

Ahem.

I don't know if it is because I am in a Swiss mood, or because I love hot dogs... Anyway, I am going to tell every one on this list a shocking piece of news: the best hot dogs in the world do not come from Germany or any Germanic country (US included). They come from... Chile . Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you cannot say you have had a great hot dog until you have tried one down here.

I am even going to be good to you, and tell you where you should get your fix in Chile: a place called Domino (which I lovingly and respectfully call " the temple ", as in " I must go worship at the temple now ").

Anybody disagrees? Bring it on. I have tried hot dogs at Grey's Papaya and in Frankfurt (I do mean the German city); it would be embarrassing if it wasn't also funny.

Domino, Chile . The. Best. Hot. Dog. In. The. Whole. Universe. Period. (was that two periods?)

I'll go back to my corner now.

In most parts of the world you go to Domino's to get pizza but in the States one often asks for a Chili Dog .

Yes it is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. The sausage was originally produced by Migros to cater for its Muslims (mainly Turkish) customers, but due to its popularity gradually becomes more and more widely available.

re Wienerli inside Brot = Swiss hot dog.

More or less usually yes. But you in places like the one in the centre of the "departure hall" of Zch HB can get the Hot Dog with a Merguez, which is a nice combination
