I am looking for a nice hotel in Basel or nearby, for a weekend break, Saturday to Monday with my wife and 8 year old, what recommendations can you give me please.
Would be nice with a pool, 4-5 stars probably, mid Sept can be outside Basel or in the town.
I've already used airport hotel which is useful for leaving from the airport, but doesn't really tick enough boxes with a child.
We'll have transport.
All recommendations from you Basel-er dwellers most welcome.
My usual is the Hotel Dorint - very close to the Messe and tram stop 5 mins walk and actually Grossbasel, the Rhine are max 10-15 mins walk.
A bit of typical business hotel but the rooms are clean and it is very quiet - even during Fasnacht!
For breakfast, don‘t pay their prices but go to the Schneider bakery on Clarastrasse for the best croissants (NOT Gipfeli).
Note that hotels in Basel are obliged to give you a free transport pass which allows you free travel at least within the city centre zone. I never know as I usually have my GA or there are never trams running during Fasnacht so I end up walking back in the wee small hours anyway.
Stop press - I have never stayed at this place - https://www.angstdienste.ch/ but they are always booked out whenever I have enquired which gives me a good feeling.
I can also dig out some of the self cater places I have stayed at if you are interested.
Not sure about a traditional "resort" hotel in Basel with a pool. Les Trois Rois certainly is top notch for a few days, or the Dorint or Swissotel near the Messe would do if you want to be in the city.
You can go where the locals go to swim outside of summer - Aqua Basilea. It's great fun for kids and adults. Check it out: http://en.aquabasilea.ch/ There is a Courtyard Marriott next door, so easy enough to come & go from a hotel. They're even open on Sundays!
Or stay in Basel city center and go there for one day. Basel has lots of nice parks (e.g. Lange Erlen) or you can wander along the river. Very possible to take it easy. Or if you must go to the Alsace for a degaustation or into the Black Forest for a hike - so many things are possible relatively close.
If you really want to splurge, book dinner at Le Cheval Blanc in the hotel (the restaurant, not the bistro)—its one of only two (or is it three now?) three-Michelin-starred restaurants in Switzerland.
If you are looking for a pool, would suggets booking the Marriott in Pratteln as it is connected to Aquabasilea which has pools, water slides, sauna, etc.
