Hi All, I live in ZH with my gf for 3 months now and I am renting a flat on my name.
I understand a household insurance is due. But somewhere I read that the insurance for the house like glasses and pipes, etc, has to be had by the owner and not the mieter. Do I have to get that?
And in this case, should it be only on my name or my gf as well?
Secondly, the civil responsibility insurance, is it also suggested? Did you have to use it in your life, ever?
I think so. Down here we call it responsabiliteĢ civile. It covers any damage you cause to a third party's body or property. So if you rent an apartment and damage the apartment then the RC will cover your liability to the landlord. Also if you injure somebody in an accident, in some cases their health insurance won't pay up but will look for them to claim their costs against your RC. It's important and it doesn't cost much.
Check out www.comparis.ch , maybe they have these insurances to compare as well. Otherwise, Visana has it for 137 for a year for you and your gf if you share the same house.
But my question was if it is mandatory, especially the household insurance.
I am referring to two different things, the RC is one, but then there is this household insurance. Comparis lets you choose one of the two or the two together for price comparison.
I belive it is mandatory, the good news is that it is not very expensive. We pay around 550 CHF a year for our liability and household insurance to cover around 200 000 CHF for our rented appartment in Basel. Of course prices vary from canton to canton.
My insurance is with Zurich connect but if you use the comparis website it can give you an idea about other possibilities.
I think it is not mandatory, but everyone (landlords) expects you to have it. If you don't have this private haftpflichtinsurance and something happens, you are expected to pay everything yourself, which in case of the house can be a lot, if you break large windows or let the bath flood, etc....
The quote I gave was without contents insurance I think, but not 100% sure.
Household contents and personal liability insurance are separate risks but RC is usually bundled in your contents insurance. But it doesn't have to be which is why it's quoted for separately. RC isn't compulsory, just advisable. The only compulsory insurance here is motor insurance and health insurance.
I am renting an apartment starting January and was told that RC/menege is compulsory for me to be able to get the keys.
I am currently not in Switzerland and trying to sort out my apartment from abroad which is been hard because of the language barrier. Is there a way i can sort out the insurance being out of Switzerland?
This is useful website, thank you. I require household insurance for only 6 months (I have personal liability under my business travel insurance), but I get the sense from a couple of other threads that the minimum period is one year, and that it is difficult to terminate insurance here. Can anyone throw some light here please?
