household contents insurance...

After being here for around a year, I d never thought I would need this. But few incidents have shaken me a bit. Yesterday someone broke into one of my colleagues' apartment and goods worth around 5-6K chf was stolen...

He had filed a complaint but you never know if he ll get any of those stuff back...So my question to EF members is if there is any kind of household insurance available and if they cover incidents like theft etc.

yes; most insurers will do contents insurance.

It is called "Hausratversicherung" (household effects) and you can do comparison shopping on Comparis.ch.

I got mine combined with my liability insurance

Can anyone recommend a household contents insurance? Anyone have any experience of having to claim? I'm looking for an insurer right now but am not sure which company to go for.

Did you check www.comparis.ch ? I went through this myself last week and Zurich Connect seem good, with a high rating and low deductable but you pay for extra things you want to insure. If you don't then they seem fairly cheap. But I have not yet signed up, because I want a company that provides extra cover for this:

Visana and zurich Connect have limits of 5000 CHF, which is absolutely nothing if your place is thoroughly damaged through flooding and you have to live in hotels for ages (i.e., it does not even have to be a Katrina scenario for the bills to rise almost as fast as the floodwaters).

Does anyone know a company that offers higher limits?

Berner insurance gives a good rate if you are a couple without children.

Not sure but Die Mobiliar has a higher limit.

Does anyone know when living in a shared appartment, whether each person needs to get "Hausratversicherung" seperately??

I know each person needs to get a separate "privathaftpflicht", but is it the same for Hausrat?

Any insurance company will provide any amount of cover providing you're willing to pay the premium.

Cheap insurance polices do not exist you either have to insure for the real value and pay or take the risk and that is for you to decide.

It's the same for any insurance, fully comprehensive or not, private health care or not.

Analyse the risk, decide what you can accept yourself and the rest get covered with an insurance policy.

True we did ours through Allianz and I took out higher overall and specific amounts to cover computers & also bikes and my watches and the wifes jewelary as these were more than the normal amounts covered.

This is an old thread. Not sure why u guys are answering 3 year old questions. Am still wondering if someone has the answer to mine...

Because some chap called Piazza asked a question.....

As for the second part, maybe easier if you just asked your insurance company rather than borthering us with 3 year old threads
