Busy working through the requirements list for marriage and this one:
How do you get a certificate of no impediment?
has me flummoxed.
An original decree absolute less than six months old we can do, but one of the above loses me.
I am wondering if it is something that a Swiss or other National might provide where a UK National can offer his recently issued (less than 6 months) (divorce was 20 years ago) decree document?
Is there a doc hereabouts all about Swiss documentation requirements for a UK National.
I can't help you here but I know what you are going through .. When I first got here , the authorities wanted my 'criminal record' , which was basically non existent if you never committed a crime ... Finally , the local council agreed to accept a ceritificate of good conduct from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Malaysia ) , which took 3 months to do ..... The people in your council maybe able to help here ....
Ask at your local town hall, doubtless they will issue one - at a price. Probably CHF30...
Added later: It could be that I was thinking of the certificate that states your not barmy and are competent to sign things. You might get one of those anyway to hang on the wall of the nuptial home...
I assume you want to get married. You, as you seem to be a UK citizen, need to go to the British Vice Consulate or Embassy and get them to do an Affidavit; you might as well get them to notorise your recent copy of your birth certificate at the same time.

1) So, being in Zermatt that looks like me off to Geneve when I get my recently ordered birth certificate, new court issued copy of old decree absolute to have both notarised and ask for an "affidavit of no impedment", which I should first ring to arrange presumably; all for the usual fees. Likewise my intended will have to have the same all notarised in the UK.
2) Do I/we need translations of ALL the docs or just the affidavits?
3) Do they need only to be into the language of the place of the nuptials? (French)

thanks very much, my better half has established she can get hers from Macclesfield Borough Council and methinks I have to go to the embassy in Switzerland or the consulate in Geneve as I am not there in the UK right now.
update: it seems there is a consular representative in Valais and he will issue said certificate of no impediment (CONI) and it is also a "certificate of residence".
Long story to get to this point, but it seems that the CONI is in fact the civil version of posting the banns of marriage. Thus the impediment would be manifested when someone came forth and spoke to the matter by claiming the know of a reason why this man/woman should not be joined etc etc.
Because the certificate reads something along the lines of (apparently, not seen one yet) "Mr Fred Bloggs of (temporarily) resident of Haus Wherver, 99000 Resort Town, Suisse is certified as having no known inpediment etc etc..." the address and residency status statement is as such a certificate of residency. To remove the word "temporary" requires a residence permit.
108chf and no delay in issue; in UK registry office wait is 15 days and Embassy 21 days - I double checked when told he can do it immediately.
Also have to have been resident for 8 days prior.
All seems a bit arcane if the intention is really to identify impediments, but there it is.
