How is living in Winterthur?

Hello! I got a job offer in Winterthur. Could you guys tell me something about that place? Are there many events? Are there many international people? I will appreciate any information!

Winterthur has regular trains to Zurich and the airport. You can go lots of places from both those places. It also has a bit of an arts scene and a science museum.

I never lived in Winterthur, but had a couple of friends living there. It's a nice city with a pretty old town. There are some yearly events - a music festival with known and unknown bands, a short film festival, the yearly city festival or the "Afropfingsten" (festival with music, food and markets). Winterthur has some theaters and museums but generally it is more quiet compared to other Swiss cities like Zürich, Basel or Geneva. Fortunately Zürich is close (by train ca. 20 min). Hope that helps...

Here you can get in touch with international people living in Winterthur:

We moved to Winterthur 8 years ago. Its not so difficult to find an appartment, you can reach every place with bicycle, Zürich is 30 minutes away for SBB commuters.

People are generally very friendly in Winterthur, criminal rate is close to zero percent. Many non-swiss people live here. There is an international school, in english language. You should be happy, generally. Just ask me, I can tell you more.

Like a cross between Gomorrah after Lot left town and Persepolis after Alexander had popped by, Winterthur stands derelict, winds howling through rattling shutters, weeds growing through rusty grates in shattered pavements.

Populated by wolves, bears and the hideous shades of deceased citizens, few people visit the town without a priest to guide and protect them. Those few who enter without precautions live to pay the price - for ever and ever and ever.

Apart from that, it's quite nice and there are regular trains to Zurich for those who fancy a bit of a change.

Good luck!

@carlasmom: what is groanworthy about his reply, please?

Old town of Winterthur is very small and most part of Winterthur is actually sprawling suburbs. I was told that Winterthur is more for alternative type with lots of artists. It is also considered as a kind of cultural centre for Switzerland. Its a extension of Zürich but with some rural characteristics. People from outside Zürich think Winterthur people and Zürich people are same but Winterthur people think Zürich people have turned up nose while they themselves are down to earth.

Best thing about Winterthur is easy access to Zürich.
