How many Masters is allowed in Switzerland?

Hi all,

Does anybody know how many Master studies is possible to do in Switzerland? I heard differently from different people: either 2 is maximum, or 7 years total is maximum. Or even there is no limit but for the 3rd Master you need to pay a lot (because Kanton compensate most of education costs actually).

Thank you very much in advance for your responses!

One of my daughters-in-law stopped at three.... no idea about the money side of it though.

I can't imagine there is any limit. Maybe you have to pay more for later ones if there is a funding issue.

For example, you can do as many Bachelors courses in the UK as you want, but you can only get a student loan for one!

I have never heard about such a limit.

However many you can afford I guess. But really how many do you need to get a job and start working?

I'm finishing one this summer and there are 2 more which I'd like to do: more special in solo-performance and the pedagogical one.

I think, I'll better ask at the university's administration directly. If I get smth interesting, I'll write here!

I know for sure it's not more than 2 Masters, and it's possible that for the 2nd master, the study time on public foundings is limited.

Note that this info is relevant only for public recognized universities/universities of applied sciences/teacher colleges.

good luck

If you get a pedagogical job and need a ped degree, you will be able to study part time and work, simmultaneously. The subsidies are there, regardless of how many Masters or PhDs one has, since it is a requalification you need in order to teach.

AFAIK there is a limit how many times and how long you can try without passing. But if you get one Master or PhD you can add many more to existing one.

But they have to be from other branches then your current ones.

For details look in the Prüfungs Ordnung, Studien Ordnung, Zulassungs Ordnung, and/or Promotions Ordnung of the relevant University.

For ex. Here all the reglautions for the University of St. Gallen.

I think two masters are allowed. But sometimes there is a chance to ask for the next one but it depends on head of Institut or departement.

There is a distinction between the number of masters you can study (as much as you want if you fullfill the admission requirements and if they have place available and you can pay) and the number of masters the public fundings will pay for you (in general no more than 2, sometimes with restrictions on the study-time).

Just my 2 cents

I never heard of any limit to having as many masters degrees as you please. However one must keep in mind that in some industry sectors it might be negatively perceived as overqualified. Then obviously it raises self posed question why spend so many years and money on education and being slapped by redundancy afterwards instead of being recognized?

If it is a question of permit, then I believe there is a limited number of years you can stay on a student visa.

Can anyone elaborate on that?

I've done a quick search but have found nothing relevant. Though I'm sure I've read it here.

Yes, this is a thing probably! Thanks. I'll try to look it out

Thanks to everybody for a very helpful and useful posts! Everyone said smth interesting for me.

Just for those of you who don't understand why I need so many masters I can say: music is different and a very hard field of activity. Here in Switzerland and in Europe is a big difference between this diplomas which in Russia are part of one. And don't wonna be just a pedagog without performer diploma or contrariwise.
