I am using nanny jobs and private lessons to supplement my income. For reference, I have a BA in English, CELTA, and preliminary US teaching licenses. I am a native English speaker and have over a decade of experience teaching English in both public and private schools. I taught preschool and kindergarten for around 4 of those years. (And I have taken care of children almost all of my life since I come from a large family.)
I am currently being considered for an English nanny job 1 full day a week (7-8 hours). There would be 3 kids between 1-5 years old. I'm not sure yet if they would have nap time (I would assume so) or if I have to make lunch and snacks. The parents are working from home in the house.
It is possible to become self-employed, though, if you apply for it and present your case. I'm non-EU (although just became Swiss last week, too...yay!) and have been self-employed for more than ten years after applying.
Will that be the case though? It’s only a few hours a week so I’m not sure they’d have to go through all the usual full time nanny employment requirements.
From what I read, this is something being done on the side rather than as full employment. The OP says it’s to supplement their income so I assume they have another full(ish) time job.
No worries. It's all in hand. I am married to a Swiss citizen and, according to official websites and the wording of my family B permit, I am allowed to seek employment and/or be self-employed. We also are taking care of all the necessary tax and insurance requirements.
Regardless of your permit situation, even for Swiss people, you need permission to be self employed from the Ausgleichskasse. You can’t just “do it” - I know, I tried, they said no (was married to Swiss on B permit at time).

I'm sure you're right! I just wanted to point it out in case others thought it wasn't possible at all. It's not an easy process, as you can imagine, but it is possible.
Yes, I know. It's all being taken care of right now. I'm not working at all right now and actually am trying to get employment instead of freelancing. So far, I've only been able to find part-time work, hence the nanny gig for a few hours as a supplement.
It's really easy to set up a legal nanny contract. Just be clear that the law requires the family to be your legal employer and ensure that they pay the deductions etc correctly. Their home is your legal workplace and there are very specific laws applying to that arrangement.
If you pay 'tax at source' there is a flat rate for your second job.
As a non-Swiss I definitely would not get into a situation where I was employed 'black' as if this detected it could impact your application for a C permit in the future.
This site seeks to connect child care providers - nannies, babysitters, etc. with employers. Looking for dossiers offering similar services to what you plan on offering should give you an idea of what the going rate in your area is.
Most on this site seem to ask for an hourly wage, assuming the family as the legal employer.
This sounds like a challenge with both parents working from home. I would definitely get a very clear job description to avoid any misunderstandings. Good luck!
