how much would it cost (approximately?) [to replace a timing belt on a car]

Hi,

Would anyone please tell me, out of their experieces, how much would changing the timing belt+water pump cost?. I am about to buy a second hand Toyota Carina with 90K kms. I guess soon I would have to change the timing belt and water pump so I wanted to have a rough estimate of how much does it cost..

Thanks much for your time.

Shaf,

Cars are expensive. 2nd hand cars mean you inherit somebody else's problem. Assume you will pay 2000 -2500 CH a year for repairs, as your water pump and timing belt are the least of your worries. I would assume that would cost around 400 to 500 CH over here.

90k kms is the trick: Check the service book, most cars need a lot of changes at the 100k km service including some rather expensive things.

So sometimes it is smarter to buy a car with 105k km that has all this done (and documented).

If you will be doing this in official garage, it will be constly. Because they buy "toyota parts" by prices x5 of prices in US ..

So, timing belt will be like 140 CHF, tensioners 100 each (there are two), plus work, plus pump (dont know the price) the whole price might easially reach 1000 CHF

Of course, if you are about to change timing belt, most likely it is a time to change gaskets for crankshuft, and maybe for carter? if it is leaking

I think the Fr 1'000 estimate is about right. Phone the Toyota garage for an estimate! Try an independant garage, they can reduce costs considerably.

also depends a lot on the engine, is it a petrol oe diesel, a 1.6 or a V6 etc etc

eg on somthing like a rover 1.4 petrol the cambelt change is simple, costs about £200 all in, on the v6 version its very hard indeed and can easily set you back £800+

they only real way to find out is to phone a toyota dealer, then call some indy garages.

here's the site of a very good indy, they do all the work on our cars, inc our jap import toyota landcruiser

Well, what I don't like in Switzerland, is that they try to do some magic things behind the scene and then charge me. For example, if timing belt is changed for my car I want to know what parts where used? I.e., parts numbers, etc. Instead they just put into "facture" "timing belt - 300 chf" and that's it

Also, they add oil into my car, while:

1. I check level each weekend

2. They don't know what kind of oil I use, and it is not recomended to mix different type of oils ..

So I recommend to OP (original poster) to buy parts himself, and for timing belt it is important to buy the OEM, because if belt breaks, the valves bend, and then visit garage. Just pay for their service, not the parts. Because they speculate very much on that.

OP mentiones Toyota Carina. I suppose this is a simple 3S generation engine.

On V6 changing belts will cost a way more than 1000 CHF. A collegue of me had V6 Passat Motion, it costed like 2000 CHF

Thank you very much all of you. I would factor these figures in .

Probable list depending on the specific engine that is mounted in your car:

VKM 71003 Tensioner Pulley, timing belt Quantity: 1

VKM 81004 Deflection/Guide Pulley, timing belt Quantity: 1

VKPC 91613 Water Pump Quantity: 1

SKF00606 Timing Belt Quantity: 1

SKF06213 O-Ring, cylinder sleeve Quantity: 1

SKF09291 Screw / Bolt Quantity: 1

SKF06431 Spring Quantity: 1

Change everything on this list. It doesn't make sense to save on parts when the labour will be the most expensive element.
