I am consider to maybe rent a apartment in Annemasse. From what I have read here, it is not the most beautiful place on earth, but ok. Is that correct? Whats your opinion?
Are there any concerns regards safety?
Also, is it possible to take a taxi/über over the border from Geneva? How much approximately would that cost in the evening?
Taxi/uber - expensive as you’ll probably be stuck in the border crossing queues for a fair time. That’s assuming they’ll take you over the border. I don’t know what their rules are on that sort of thing.
I've seen French plated taxis unloading passengers in gare Cornavin or hotels quite frequently so it shouldn't be a problem I think. Probably best to buy a small scooter if you know how to ride one.
I tried to get uber last Sunday night to get to Versoix from Geneva airport and basically there was no offer, or wait for one second after a 10 min wait it was confirmed, then cancelled again and next was a message that due to high demand price is now 3x higher (i.e. much higher than taxi fares); i had the same in Brussels where i could not get someone to pick me up ("all uber are busy"), so for me anyway uber seems unreliable.
Safety is not an issue. Basically it is as you say not a very charming place but otherwise convenient enough. scooter is best option but there are regular buses.
Price surging on UBER is actually it's best feature, you can always get a ride without much delay if you don't mind paying. I have been given times of 1-2 hours for a black cab or mini cab in London during peak demand, UBER will arrive in 2 minutes for 100% loading, what's not to like.
As already said, Annemasse is not dangerous. For transport, checkout Blablacar (pretty silly name) the awesome carsharing app. Trip cost: 3€. Next year the tram opens: 1 tram every 9 minutes. Works from 5h30 to 23h30 7/7. Nice!
Indeed .. The tram 12 .. Straight to the border and walk over and get a taxi there or bus..
Much of annemasse is ok, some pretty nice .. The area just over the border (from the tram) looks crap, but it's a fairly big town with nice and not so nice bits.
