There is a used paper container near us which is intended for old newspapers, magazines etc.
If I have old books to dispose of, I use that. I simply strip the covers away and use the container for the paper part. The covers etc. would go in the normal garbage.
Surprised you don't have a recycling center in zürich where you can bring the paper for free. However even if you have to pay it cannot cost that much, it's just paper/carton after all.
My village does not have a separate container for books.
Most are "old" computer textbooks i.e. Java Swing, Active X, Turbo C, Borland C++, Pascal, VB, etc. Some books from my Uni days i.e. Database design, OS, etc. I even have Bjarne Stroustrup "The C++ Programming Language", first edition (I will keep that one). So books on outdated technology (in good shape though). Also bunch of books from when my son attended the International School here, and a bunch of books in Icelandic (my native language).
Local recycling center charges CHF 0.50 per kg. I was just moving the boxes around and it is closer to 200Kg in total - so around 100 chuffs to get rid of them.
In Zürich city paper and cardboard are picked up from your house (every two weeks). You can bring them to the recycling center which charges by weight (difference between vehicle weight entering and leaving). Each household also gets 4x 100kg coupons for the recycling center. In my experience, often if I have such a coupon, I am not charged anything, regardless of the weight, but ymmv. Further, there is the vbz cargo tram which parks in different neighborhoods. You can bring almost anything you want there, as long as you don't bring it in a car.
