How to get anti-biotic treatment without a doctor? I don’t have a GP and I have to wait months to even see one/register with one.
You can’t.
Is there a “Permanence” in your enviroment? Go there, it’s walk-in. There is one in Winterthur for example but I guess that’s no where near you.
Or support the bad reputation of foreigners misusing/overcrowding hospital emergencies in Switzerland.
If you live near an airport, every airport should have a doctor there that also takes on non-flight related patients.
How do you know you need antibiotics?
You’ll need a prescription to get them so you’ll have to go to one of the walk-in clinics if you haven’t got a GP.
Get off your high horse.
There are many serious, life-threatening conditions in which life can only be preserved by use of antibiotics.
My GP told me that the hospitals are full of Swiss people who insist on smoking even though it’s quite clear that it causes many serious health conditions.
I’ve seen a lot of these “Permanance” places and various other 24/7/365 spin offs popping up around Zurich. Don’t know where you’re based but you could do a quick search.
I’d say if it’s an acute infection which has been rumbling on for a few days with no signs of clearing up on its own then it’s justified to pop to the emergency room. With infections, things can turn nasty very quickly if untreated.
I think I have this. I have an impacted wisdom tooth and it’s been getting extremely painful (yes, I’m one of those people who’s avoided the dentist for decades).
This morning I woke up with rash all over one side of my face and pain in my tongue and around my face and neck (in addition to the teeth).
I’m guessing the tooth got infected and the bacteria spread.
Thanks for the tip. I think there’s an equivalent in Basel:
Yes, it’s probably been going on for at least a week, but I didn’t realise the early signs. Just when the rash suddenly appeared this morning.
Surely you need a dentist rather than a general purpose doctor?
Dentists can both prescribe antibiotics and fix the problem which is causing the infection.
Yes, I’m going to go to the dentist now!
Good luck!
Well, you are an emergency but Permanence is still better as road-accidents, heart-attacks etc. will not get in your way as in the hospital.
For people who don’t need a doctor regularly I got the impression those Permanences (which are newish here) are perfect.
But the dentist was definitely your best choice, get well soon.
Quite so, and no doctor, be it a GP or at a Permanence, would simply prescribe antibiotics for a tooth infection/abscess, they would only point you at your nearest emergency dental clinic.
Be aware that it won’t be covered by health insurance though.
Not sure about that. At the moment it’s an illness, so part of the treatment will be covered by health insurance.
Been there, seen it, worn the t-shirt.
Over the last 40 years or so, I’ve been to a permanence a few times. I’ve never had a bill refused by my insurance company. Perhaps surcharges for weekends or evenings would be rejected but I don’t know.
I was talking about the dentist. Although that seems to be in some doubt now as well.
ooops, you are right the basic health insurance doesn’t cover dental.
the present emergency is illness. The rest after won’t be covered.
Treatment of the abscess and infection will be covered by the health insurance, tooth removal or other dental treatment won’t unless you have supplementary dental insurance.
