Hi,
I would like to know if anybody has advice on how to get signed a medical certificate for running in a French race. Any doctors who will do it cheaply and quickly?
How about doing it in France or Germany? I live in the Basel area.
I haven't seen any other thread discussing this...
Thanks
Go to France, Dr's are quite used to do this, it will cost 20-25 euro. I needed one to join a gym.
Thanks! Sounds like a good idea.
Anybody from the Basel area who could recommend a doctor in France who would do this? (St. Louis, Huningue, etc)
The fee is their standard consultation fee €22 (maybe a little more if it is not your regular GP). They all do it so just pick whoever is most convenient, if all you want is the bit of paper.
I think it's usually 22, except out of hours/Sunday when its 50.
Surely you sent it a week before the race to the address on the website.
I definitely sent mine before the race in Italy - and so did my friend.
We were both really shocked they hadn't received them
Just to report back on my experience, I went to a French doctor in downtown Huningue and had a quick checkup. It only cost 23 euros.
This is the place I went to. It is a doctor's office next to the central square, easy to reach with the 603 bus, first-come first-served basis:
Association Médicale des Docteurs Meyer et Malparty
12 r Boulangers
68330 Huningue

Nice try, but the French are even dodgier than you . Our local races specify: don't send it, just bring it on the race day.
Gee, I thought this was someone asking where they could get a medical certificate to be off work to run in a race in France.
A good doctor should not give a certificate unless they know you and your medical history and medication, etc- and without doing at least basic examination and listen to your heart, etc. At the end of the day, if something happens to you, and they did not pick up anything obvious and signed you as fit- they could be sued, etc. If you live here, don't you have a GP?
They only accept a certificate from a French Dr, so having a GP here won't help.
A French Dr can take you blood pressure, listen to your heart & look at the patient & get an idea of your health. No chance to sue a French Dr, Ski resort or anything like that, their courts would just laugh at the concept
TBH there is not a Dr anywhere in the world who knows my medical history, there is very little history for a start & I have never given details of previous Dr's.
My doctor in Schaffhausen is quite happy to sign any race certificate in any language, cost 20 CHF last time I think.
Hi all,
In real danger of not being able to run my race this weekend. I am heading to Rome for the marathon and was totally oblivious of this medical certification requirement until I found a mail in my SPAM folder.
I have been calling doctors in Basel this morning (just arrived in town) but no luck for an appt today thus far.
Any recommendations on what to do? Where best to go?
Please help!
Why don't you try this place? In case, it's closed, you should look up the yellow pages for French towns near Basel, and try to call them. By the way, most French doctors surgeries are closed between 12 and 2. Some days are for appointments only. If you're new, you are probably relying on public transport, so suggest you look at Saint Louis - 604 bus from Schifflande, or Huningue, 603 bus same. Saint Louis, main street is Avenue de Bale/Rue de Mulhouse.

I remember when we lived in France and our neighbours needed a certificate for their teenage son so that he could go on a diving trip in the school holidays.
They asked the GP in the neighbouring building ( who was our GP) for the certificate and were horrified that he refused to give one without examining the boy first. They thought he was a useless incompetent young GP.
They called up their GP in town, she wrote them a certificate without asking any questions at all and they went and collected it later that day.
It was our opinion that their GP was the useless incompetent one. She had no idea about current state of this boy's health and yet she was prepared to issue him with a medical certificate for a potentially dangerous activity.
Dr Roth in Hesingue just over the boarder in France. Speaks English and has open doors so no appointments needed. I think he charges 26 euros.

Hey all,
Thank you for all the help! It worked out in the end, got my certificate on Friday afternoon and was able to travel to Rome and run the marathon. Thank you again for the replies and PMs!!!
And I suppose they would have been the first ones to want to sue, should anything have happened to him How any doctor can issue a med cert without properly examining someone and taking a proper history, is beyond me and totally unprofessional- but more importantly, very dangerous- even for someone who seems fit and young and healthy.
What I find is bizarre that in France you need a medical certificate if you want to get fit on a regular basis. It's not required in CH or even in France to go to the gym on a PAYG basis.
It would actually make more sense if people needed a medical certificate to eat fast food, drink alcohol or have a desert in a restaurant .
Couldn't agree more. It was particularly worrying in this case as we knew that he was smoking behind his parent's back and of course this was never mentioned to their doctor or on the medical questionnaire for the trip.
We didn't know about it until after the trip otherwise I think we would have felt obliged to say something.
