How to get rid of my unwanted and big stuff, e.g., my mattress

Hello Everybody,

I am living in Lausanne, and I am about to change my mattress. But I do not know how to get rid of my old mattress. Is there any place that you can bring your used and unwanted stuff to get rid of them?

Thanks a lot.

its possible to sell it to some shops. u may try ikea etc. they will come and pick it up. however, why u just dont wait till there is the day when u can discard unwanted stuff outside ur flat, so that someone needy can pick it up?

If you buy new furniture from Ikea, for a small fee they will take the old stuff for recycling when they deliver the new one.

Check out 'dechets' for the Lausanne area, because in Romandie, there should be these type of recycling centres. These normally also take mattresses, but you have to take them there yourself.

It depends on where you live, but the main, central decheterie is in Mally on rue de l'Usine a Gas.

Sometimes, where we live, people leave stuff outside with a note attached saying "gratis". The stuff just magically disappears.

Hello

We have just bought a new mattress from a shop in Lausanne. When they deliver the new mattress (in a couple of weeks), they will take the old one away with them. Maybe see if the shop you are buying from will do the same?

The company that brought us our new mattress took the old one away for no charge (we live near Zurich though, so maybe where you live is different). I have also seen them left outside with stickers on for the normal rubbish collectors to take.

How to get rid of unwanted big stuff?

Try sleeping with her best friend. Worked for me.

If the mattress is still usable, you can post it on www.anibis .ch for free, if it is unusable bring it to the decheterie in Malley

I have had the same question in the past also, here are you real options:

1. Ask the shop where you buy from, if they take the old stuff with them when they deliver.

2. Use the local garbage disposal centers (déchèterie).

In Lausanne you have five different sites you can go to: http://www.lausanne.ch/view.asp?docI...899&language=E

However, you need an access card, which you can request for free here: http://www.lausanne.ch/view.asp?domId=64865&language=E

3. Use the mobile garbage disposal centers (déchèteries mobiles):

In the past once every three months you could dump virtually all your garbage outside at a designated spot. They have changed these rules now and created the déchèteries mobiles, which are mobile garbage disposal centers. Basically, they are large garbage trucks which come around at fixed schedules, sadly often during working hours, but useful if you don't have a car.

You can find a list of locations here: http://lausanne.ch/view.asp?domId=64900&language=E

However, check their agenda and specifically where you can find them. Check here: http://lausanne.ch/view.asp?domId=65019&language=E

Hope this helps.

every month there is a day for large items for garbage pickup. it's the day i usually go looking for old flower pots.

check your local schedule. not sure about mattresses but probably. i've seen some pretty big stuff left out.

The city of Lausanne stopped doing "Big Garbage Pick-up Day" just this year. Now you are supposed to take your items yourself to your nearest decheterie. A mattress would be considered "incinerable".

Having said that, however, I must confess, that I put two broken suitcases out with my regular trash bags just to see if the garbage guys would take them. The suitcases didn't last 82 seconds before they were picked up by passers-by. Maybe your mattress will enjoy the same fate?

While we're at this topic - since I'm a newbie and can't starta thread yet. We have a bunch of non working electronics like a couple of cell phones, chargers, an iron that won't start? Is there someplace to post these for people who may want to just take and fix them perhaps. Alternaively what is the best way of disposal in CH?

Why can't you start a thread?

You can take them to the local garbage disposal place (Entsorgungshof) and they have seperate electrical disposal.
