Hi,
I need to look for a gynae doctor to care for my pregnancy and I have no clue how it works here. Should I choose the doctor before the hospital? How do I find a good doctor who will care for my pregnancy throughout the delivery who can also speak good English? I live in a small village of Arni AG next to Birmensdorf/Islisberg/Wetswill. Schlieren and Triemli are not too far away but how do I look up for a doctor in those areas? I tried to track many threads but found no info about my area, nor recent conversations.
Thank you very much indeed.
Throw them a greased rugby ball.
If they drop it, the chances don't look great come the birth
You also need to check your insurance. Some will not let you choose hospital or doctor or will restrict you to a specific canton. There is also the issue of having a private room or sharing with others.
Check your insurance as others said
Decide where you want to give birth if you can go private
If above, look at their doctor list
If not find an obgyn you are happy with
Office hours
Location
Equipment
Approach
Do you feel you trust them? Are they explaining things clearly enough ? Do you like their manner?
Everyone is different here - some will love and recommend a doctor others would avoid
Good luck
You can choose your hospital later in your pregnancy once you've taken a look at a few, but depending on where you go your Dr might not be there. It's not really an issue, above all you should feel comfortable giving birth at your selected location. I had all of my prenatal care in Baden and gave birth in Richterswil, my gyno wasn't there, but for me it worked because the care and process at my particular hospital was more important to me.
Also I highly suggest hooking up with a mums group if you can, it's good to meet people in similar situations to whom you can ask questions as you progress along.
Good luck and congrats!
Thanks all for all those advices. I have a better idea now. A few more questions. Am I right that here it seems that you don't necessarily have your obgyn doc to deliver for you? If so does it mean that it is very reliable here that they will touch base and understand your case seamlessly? Another question is, do obgyn docs practice at their private locations meaning that during pregnancy you go for the routine there and just go to hospital of your choice at labour? In that case, does it mean that if you want your doc to deliver for you, you have to choose the hospitals where he/she do the delivery? Otherwise you will end up with different doctors like in JanerMacP chose?
In my country you start early with your doctor of choice until delivery, at the same venue throughout. It is because most doctors practice at a few hospitals so you have options of hospitals for one doctor. And they usually practice at hospitals not private clinic. So for the whole process you are with the same doctor, the same crew, the same venue which makes you familiar and comfortable with everything before the big day. This is why I try to figure out how it works here and how I could have a perfect match that minimizes new factors. Not to mention the limitation of insurance as another factor. At least I have a private policy, though.
Thanks for bearing with my long questions that may seem so ordinary to you guys.
Correct, you don't need to have your OB deliver for you. As you have private insurance you can choose any Dr and go to any hospital you want. If your Dr doesn't "service" the hospital you want to deliver at its not a big deal. Your Dr will send a copy of your file to the hospital beforehand so that they are current on your pregnancy status and state, and will refer to that file if they have questions. You can also choose to meet with the hospital beforehand to discuss your pregnancy and ask any questions. Your meeting would most likely be with a midwife, but that's who usually is with you for the majority if your birth, the Drs usually come in towards the end, or at regular intervals to see how you are doing. And yes, if you want a specific Dr to deliver for you, you will need to go to their hospital.
The location of care will depend on the Dr, some work within the frauenkliniks of the hospitals, and some have private clinics. I went to the hospital purely because I didn't know of a private practice.
You should really think of what you want for a birth. For me I had a specific checklist that I wanted to me met - no IV upon checking in, no episiotomy, water birth, let the cord pulse - essentially I wanted a very natural birth, I wanted to be left alone in my room with my husband to labor at my own pace without anyone pressuring me to take any drugs to speed it up, no matter how long it took. I also wanted to work with people who were familiar with hypnobirthing. I would have preferred a home birth but he put his foot down. At the baden hospital I met with a midwife and she basically told me to look elsewhere because I wouldn't get what I wanted from them. So I did. It really depends on what your birth plan choices are.
Honestly though I wouldn't worry about that this early in the game, you can always change Drs if you're not totally satisfied.
I second the advice about considering what you want. But if you're like me and a lot of other women on this forum who advised me on my birth plan, be prepared for your checklist to go out the window!
I can send anyone a copy of my birth plan if they want it, they can then edit and adjust to their liking.
I would love to see that! Can you send to my PM?
Many thanks!
