How to preserve carrots?

Dear all,

ALDI sells dirt cheap carrots, but everytime when I buy them, the carrots get dried up easily (sometimes even within 2 days). Could anyone tell me how I could store them a bit longer? Or is it really a matter of quality that I should switch to Migros or Coop?

Thanks.

Wash, slice, freeze.

The problem with any supermarket packed carrots, is they have been washed and then put in plastic bags.

They soon go rotten. You need to peel them and freeze them.

Or, go to a Landi and buy unwashed carrots, these can be kept wrapped, & in a cool place.

I have observed that mostly its with the carrots at ALDI that gets rotten fast.

I've seen it with Migroop as well as Aldi, from bio to Prix Garantee - neither the retailer nor the price seem to be a factor. My experience has been that anytime carrots are packaged in plastic they can rot within days.

Thanks for the tip about unwashed carrots at Landi, Sbrinz!

I have to second Nikiagarwal ́s comment. In my experience, Aldi ́s carrots are the worst I ́ve had here so far. I like Aldi for some things, but with produce you have to really check them out. Green leafy things like lettuce, also looks pretty bad there. Again , to qualify, my kids eat them only raw, so the qualities like taste and crunchiness are quickly obvious . Perhaps cooked, the difference would be negligible.

I ́m sorry to defend Coop and Migros but they do have the better carrots, here in CH.

Carrot preservatives ?

My Swiss m-i-law stores her unwashed carrots in the natur-keller, she says they must be kept in the dark, on a sheet of plastic that only lightly covers them so they can still "breathe", and not go limp/dry. They have to have NOT been washed.

My own experience with freezing carrots was that without first blanching them in boiling water, then ice cold water, before freezing - they`re inclined to be rubbery when you cook them. Had to throw out masses at that attempt, they were tasteless tenderised rubber!

I guess that the carrots that still have their green tops (in shops) are unwashed? Should still be a bit of soil clinging to them, at least.

wash them properly then put in the fridge after drying......or you can ask someone in india to send you here the fresh ones..lol
