how to start learning swiss german

Hi!

I am a medical student and Ill be graduating within 2 years, so I was thinking about moving to Switzerland (Zurich particularly). According to my understanding and what I have read online, the required language is Swiss German (yeah, I know its a dialect), so I was wondering what is the best way to do it? I mean, should I start by studying German and then the dialect?

And if so, what is the most recommended way for fast learning?

Thank you very much, Zimi

Hi

Yes it is better to learn High German first and then to learn the dialect. I would recommend immersing yourself in the language as much as possible. Listen to German-speaking radio, watch TV or films in German, read German and speak it as much as you can. Even if you don't understand 100% you will be able to get a feel for the language and be able to pick up vocabulary as you go along.

If you are starting from no German understanding at all, I would enroll on a course, either online or in your home country, as soon as possible. Within 2 years you can get to an excellent standard of High German if you are dedicated and you put in the hours of practice and learning.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Find what works for you. Different people learn in different ways, some by listening and speaking, others by reading and learning words and so on so when someone swears by a particular course, app or book or insists on TV or radio it worked for them but may not for you.

Your English seems good, how did you get this? Otherwise just get German and the dialect will soon follow.
