How to store fuel?

Let’s say I have a 25 l metal canister for fuel. Is there any legal way to store it (with gasoline inside) in a building? Zurich city, either in a rented apartment (incl. terrace), Tiefgarage, or cellar.

I assume not?

What would be the requirements if you have your own house?

According to this, there are no restrictions up to 25L.

But why? Personally I would not be happy with a 25L cannister in my flat.
I presume oil fired heating systems have their own regulations.

We store 25l metal canisters in the garage & cellar. The canister is labelled with a fill date, and I put a fuel stabilizer. Then, I try to rotate it every 12 months or so (i.e. pop it into the car and then refill it the same day).

The oldest I successfully used was a few months ago, and according to the label I had filled it when COVID started in 2021… and the car had no issues with it despite it being >4 years old.

We also have a small generator (2kW) just in case. It’s only been used once during a blackout to keep the freezers running.

I live in a rented apartment. The underground garage is 100+ spaces. If I remember well, there was something in the contract about not storing anything beyond summer/winter tires or a roof box. Some years ago a neighbor started to store his paper and carton waste on the parking. We all got a letter with a reminder to not store flammable materials in the parking. If carton was an issue…gasoline surely too. But, those were the admins at the building that more or less care about what happens here, 1 data point. It’s common sense, but no idea if it’s effectively a general practice.

If it were my own house, there’s a simple test. If you enter the room and there’s a little smell of fuel, it means the canister is not working properly, or the room lacks enough ventilation. So, it’s a NO. Find another room. I used fuel canisters long time ago when offroading, no need for them when there’s always a pump in 1 km radius.

PS. filling a canister with gasoline should be a magnet for curious glances these days.

Lawn mower?
A boat’sOutboard engine?
Garden Strimmer?
Generator?
Camping stove?

Also some heaters… in the mountain house, we have a space heater that runs on liquid fuel. Works wonders (admittedly a temporary measure while the renovations happen, but it’s quite impressive)
