How to use compost bags?

That is a stupid question, but I would like to know how do you use compost bags.

The compost bags start to degrade after one week with biodegradable trash, leaving the bottom of the bin sticky and smelly. Do you use normal plastic bags around the compost bags? Or, are there any tear-resistant, leakage-proof biodegradable bags?

I am putting it either into another bin (if it has smelly content) or hold it in an old plate which is easy to wash in the dishwasher. Cleaning the bin is more complex, hence I do not prefer it.

If I run out of compostable bags I usually put them into another plastic one, empty the contents and the dispose of the bag in standard household garbage. Less messy for my taste.

Toss them away before they start degrading?

10 (small) bags for like 3.50 Fr is not the end of the world even if you dont fill them to the absolut brim. And if you have like 1 Orange peel or so then just dump that separately. Not rocket science

I typically put 2x compost bags, one inside the other.

Then, I just replace one bag every week. (the old outer bag becomes the new inner bag). The exception is when it leaks - then I toss both bags...

That way the bin stays clean (most of the time)...

I fixed the same exact problem by taking out compost 2x week.

But it makes me less of a green fan, tbh. They should fix the #$*&% bags.

I bought a fixture for compost bags to keep them hanging in the air, so they keep dry and do not degrade. Just do not overload a bag, it may break under pressure.

This one is the sturdies and is designed for huge bags: https://www.kruizinga.com/waste+and+...1/new/8256501/

For indoors use with smaller bags we have something like that: https://www.amazon.com/AYADA-Cabinet.../dp/B087Q91Q7L

The comments posted on that site don’t seem to inspire confidence in that product.

The ones from Aldi degrade less in my experience

It's not. Or if it is, we build a team. I didn't even know they existed.

So far it was tossing the stuff into a plastic pail, trott down to the green bin, empty it out and wahs the pail. Guess how often I bothered with that.

They certainly don't, and this fact has something to do with the quality and the poor design. I got a similar looking item from Manor, it is almost decent: still looks like foreign object, but at least it is sturdy and made of steel.

Mkay, sooo....

Has anyone heard of the compost eating worms yet? The fertilising juice machine?

I am glad I do not need to eat anytime soon.

Nope but I went and checked it out .

Worms - the new pets?

No shit. Eeerm, I mean no kidding.

They sell the whole shibang at Schilliger.

I pour a little bit of baking powder on the bottom of the kitchen compost bucket - it neutralises the stink and 'juices' during summer months, then line it with a paper towel and only then place a compost bag.

Just add it to the normal trash, problem solved!

I gave up on the compost bags after a couple of %&*+ messes all over the kitchen floor.

Now I just use regular bags that fit in the green box. I like the roll of kitchen clear garbage bags from Lidl. Empty the full bags in the city compost container then toss the bag in the regular garbage.

Not exactly environmentally-friendly though, is it?

Can't you just forgo the bag and rinse the green container after emptying it? (and don't let it get so smelly in the first place by emptying more often?)

We use an old ice cream container. Just wash it every time.

Let's call it a reasoned compromise.

It seals so well! My Ikea compost trash can is useless, the lid is just so loose and stinks. We have so much organic waste since we eat mostly veggies and fruits, and really would have to go to the communal compost 2x a week, at least. It's annoying, it is cca 700m and we are extremely busy beings who are more outside than inside. I still want to recycle, I think I'll copy your ice-cream tub!
