HTC Desire Z

Android phone with keyboard. Perhaps the winning combination? Look forward to seeing this...

I feel like I am one of the last people in this country without a smartphone. My Motorola will be ditched soon in favour of something Android-esque... Still open to the touchscreen option. Will figure it out soon.

I noticed however that this Z model will ship in North America later this year. There is no date yet for Europe. I suppose however it is an idea of things to come.

it's to be released late october. digitec has it on pre-order. i'm looking at uk suppliers as i want a proper keyboard (UK layout).

having played around with the ipod, i can say that my aged E71 is far superior in many ways to the ipod interface, even surprisingly on some browsing activities.

the physical keyboard does blow away the IOS virtual keyboard esp. when common punctuation keys require changing input modes.

hopefully this new slider will have the benefits of the bigger screen with a physical keyboard.

All depends what you are used to Phil.

I used to swear by phones with qwerty keyboards. I've had an HTC Universal (aka the brick), a Blackberry Pearl, an HTC TyTn II and SE Xperia X1 in the last few years.

When the iPhone came out, I decided to have a play with it and just didn't get on with it, so discounted it. When I had the Xperia, I blagged a cheap iPod touch off my sister as a music player and as I played around with it more I got used to the virtual keyboard. When my Xperia failed, about a week after I arrived in SWitzerland and 2 weeks after its warranty ran out, I couldn't see any decent WinMo or Android replacements, so bought an iPhone 3GS. I haven't looked back since and can type as quick on it as I ever could on a tiny qwerty pad. It's the second best phone I've ever had, beaten only by the iPhone 4. I had a dabble with the Desire when it came out to see what the fuss about Android was all about - the iPhone having convinced me that keyboard free was an option. Still prefer the iPhone though, so the Desire will be up for sale as soon as I can find the box.

i guess there are 2 factors here:

1. virtual vs physical keyboard

2. the layout of the iphone keypad

i agree you can get used to the virtual keyboard (though i would say it is inferior to the physical, but you get the bonus of screen real-estate)

the second point is that the iphone keyboard layout sucks. see also:

I pre-ordered my Desire HD from superetrader (they are currently running a promo together with modaco: http://android.modaco.com/content/an...-superetrader/ )

Anyway, they also have the Desire Z listed for pre-ordering:

Desire HD looks much better IMO

Virutal keyboard + Swype = win

I agree...

HTC Desire HD

desire hd seems a little too big for me. doesn't the desire z also have a virtual keyboard?

i'm weighing up between the desire z and the nokia e72.

What does the desire have over the HTC desire except a slower processor though?

Although the new generation 45nm processors are much better

I was wondering what sucks about the keyboard layout? I know on my old 3G (Yes still waiting for delivery of the 4G since 31 July....!!!) can change to different international layouts - I don't have problems typing with it - just wondering as I have never used a different type of smart phone.

I have been following this phone for a wee while now... I really like the look of it. Having used touchscreen for ages, the Motorola Milestone was my first QWERTY device, and as flawed as it is, it's made me realise I love having a keyboard.

The Desire Z is very simiolar to the original Desire in terms of specs... though somewhat annoyingly has an 800mhz processor as opposed to 1ghz. Not sure why they decided to do that but never mind, i'm sure it can be overclocked. Camera is the same also I think, and while not fantastic, it does the job. QWERTY looks decent, will certainly be better than the Milestone.

I wish Samsung were bringing the Epic 4G out in Europe, as i'd buy that like a shot. It's by far the most powerful phone in existance (basically a Samsung Galaxy S with QWERTY), the Hummingbird processor is insanely powerful.

They couldn't be any more different if you tried, the Android OS is much, much nicer to use than that dated Symbian v3.

Yeah, I played with a friends iPhone 4 and couldn't help clicking the "Send" button when writing an SMS, it's placed so close to the p at the top right it's silly.

Although it's 800 Mhz it's next generation 45nm CPU

That's a nice table. I'm not planning on upgrading until I can get my hands on a 1.7Ghz dual core number. A guy can dream can't he

Ahhhhh its next-gen? I had a quick look but thought it was the same as the oiginal Snapdragon... in that case it's not so bad I guess. Hopefully it will overclock to 1ghz+ with a cooked ROM too.

I will let it pass this time. But don't let me see this insolence from you again.

main complaint is that it has no common punctuation keys so you need to change modes to type a normal sentence containing characters such as: ,.'!?

yeah. symbian is pretty dated, but in many ways superior to the android and iphone offerings.

it's sad to see symbian going the same way as palmos - at least symbian is stable, which is more than i can say for palmos.

In which major ways just out of interest?

Me too!
