Humidity in the summer

Hi,

Is it very humid and “sticky” usually in the summer in the area around Zurich? How is it comparing to UK?

Depends on where in the UK you mean. Near the coast it's humid at times, inland it's drier. Zurich, for the last couple of weeks at least has been really humid but that's because we've had loads of rain. On the whole, it's not too bad. Winters are dry (or at least my scratchy contact lenses tell me so...)

I find it intolerably humid* - but then I live on the Dark Side ( of the Rossberg ) where oppressive weather seems to get stuck between the hill behind us and the ridge in front.

Switzerland is a land of micro-climates - a few hundred meters lower or higher the weather may be quite different. All depends on where you live. And of course comfort levels depend on your perception based on what you are used to.

Fortunately one can purchase a dehumidifier fairly inexpensively for those summers where the paper in your printer starts to curl and your books begin to mold.

* As much as I dislike the weather here, it's actually pretty mild compared to my native Chicago or the places I lived in Asia. So I guess I should count my blessings

depends - if you call 2 months of consecutive rainfall humid, then yes, summers here are humid. Winters are humid as well as are springs. Fall is usually the only dry season (2 weeks without rain).

I despise the humidity here. Although I visited Florida once in the middle of the summer and this is nowhere near as bad as that was, at least. But I've never been to the UK so I have no idea how it compares to there.

I am from California where we have months of very hot days but never any humidity...I don't think I ever truly appreciated that fact until I moved here

It seems unbearably humid this summer. Granted, this is only the second complete summer i've spent in Switzerland, but it seems much worse this year than last year.

Thinking back to when I was in the UK, you would remark when it was humid, because it was out of the norm.

This year in Switzerland (Biel area) we remark when it isn't humid. Which is not so much fun!

It is usually humid in summer in Switzerland. The UK is usually humid too. The difference here is that it is about 4deg warmer than the UK, or 10deg this year, so the humidity is noticeable.

Thunder storms often with hail and sticky days at 30deg characterize a lowland Swiss summer...

I am glad its not just me.

I am normally quite a warm person anyway, but I am finding it very hot and sweaty at mo. Fortunately, whilst I might sweat a lot it is odour free. Which is more than I can say for others..........jeez

But bed time is a nightmare. I sleep in the birthday suit anyhow, but despite windows open, cover off, its tooooooooo hot.

I need a big fan, and no, not my mother, the cooling aids.

Even the dog has started to sleep under the bed instead of on it.

I've found the weather here to only be uncomfortably hot and humid for a few weeks each July. Compared to where I'm from, the summers here are quite mild and comfortable (and very short!)
