Hello,
I have been here in Zurich 3 weeks now, ex UK and have a few questions... Strange quirky questions , but ones that keeping popping up in my head...
1) Warm beer, not lager, and strong cider.... WHERE ?????
2) When is it going to get cold ?
3) Are all the empty seats next to people on the trams and trains , empty out of politeness , or should I continue and just plonk myself down in the nearest empty one ?
4) Where can I found proper salt and vinegar crisps , and some good cider ?
5) Are forum members getting together in Zurich soon ? Need to say hello and have a drink...loads of drink. Its been 2 weeks now since a pint , and Johnny no mates here is getting restless in Oerlikon...
6) Should I just blend in and just bumble my way down the main high street not looking where I am going and just bump into people as I go or is there a subtle Zurich pedestrian code I can subscribe too ?
7) Anyone fancy a pint ?
Overall, such a lovely city, cant believe how easy it is to get around... Have just recovered from investigating rental prices and the uber expensive £1.50 twix but I haven't been mugged yet, my car is still in the same place I parked it and I wake up actually feeling brighter and more positive than I did when working in the Docklands or Basildon. Cant wait for the Xmas markets , anyone point me in teh right direction and date/time for the next one ?
Hope to have a drink with you all soon...
My word my good fellow, lets see...
1) Warm beer, not lager, and strong cider.... WHERE ?????
Coop stock Bulmers and Strongbow, if you want reeeeal scrumpy you will just have to make it yourself. Coop also has some CAMRA-class ale and beer.
2) When is it going to get cold ?
Hope not! Cold and motorbike do not mix very well.
3) Are all the empty seats next to people on the trams and trains , empty out of politeness , or should I continue and just plonk myself down in the nearest empty one ?
You can plonk yourself on a empty seat and watch the cabaret when a Swiss-sapiens tries to claw his way out of his skull in embarrassment.
4) Where can I found proper salt and vinegar crisps , and some good cider ?
I pestered the Landlord of my local pub until he yielded and ordered some, suggest you do the same.
5) Are forum members getting together in Zurich soon ? Need to say hello and have a drink...loads of drink. Its been 2 weeks now since a pint , and Johnny no mates here is getting restless in Oerlikon...
Sorry mate can't help there, live wrong side of St Gollum.
6) Should I just blend in and just bumble my way down the main high street not looking where I am going and just bump into people as I go or is there a subtle Zurich pedestrian code I can subscribe too ?
7) Anyone fancy a pint ?
Yes! No! and hell yes on afterburner and Steroids.
1. Someone will come along and help you out on that soon. Your best bet is to try the English pubs like Oliver Twist, Nelsons, Paddy Reily's.
2. I'll ask Mother Nature on my next chat with her.
3. People usually ask even though its empty.
4. English pubs or the Irish Shamrock at the end of Tram Line 7 @ Wollishofen. Just dont die of shock from the price.
5. Talacker Drinks next Wed organised by Uncle Max is the most upcoming one. Check Socials section.
6. I am still trying to figure that one out myself.
But feel free to stop in the middle of the road suddenly, give three kisses to a friend without caring who might bump into you from behind.
Hello there!
2) When is it going to get cold ?
Should be here soon, together with morning fog, 3 months worth of grey skies and grim faces...
4) Where can I found proper salt and vinegar crisps , and some good cider ?
Check your local pub, or alternatively check out "Beers of the world" in Zurich mainstation, just above track 21/22 + 23/24 - they have a modest selection of beers worldwide and salt and vinegar chips, albeit only the small packs.
5) Are forum members getting together in Zurich soon ? Need to say hello and have a drink...loads of drink. Its been 2 weeks now since a pint , and Johnny no mates here is getting restless in Oerlikon...
Check the Social events section - there should be drinks on the weekend (I guess in the Outback lounge) or next wednesday at the Talacker
7) Anyone fancy a pint ?
Should not be a problem to find someone... the weekend is nigh...
Cant wait for the Xmas markets , anyone point me in teh right direction and date/time for the next one ?
There is a X-mas market at mainstation, but if you want to see the nice ones you might have to go out of town (heard that Bremgarten is nice as well as Bern and Einsiedeln)
Hope to have a drink with you all soon...
Cheers to you! Have a good time...
1) Warm beer, not lager, and strong cider.... Coop. Try any English Pubs like Nelson's, Oliver Twist.
2) When is it going to get cold ? Soon
3) Are all the empty seats next to people on the trams and trains , empty out of politeness , or should I continue and just plonk myself down in the nearest empty one ? Look here Is this seat free? (Swiss German)
4) Where can I found proper salt and vinegar crisps , and some good cider ? Again at English pubs
5) Are forum members getting together in Zurich soon ? Midweek Drinks at the Talacker Bar, Zurich 25th November Try at your own risk. They can be potentially dangerous for your well being.
6) Should I just blend in and just bumble my way down the main high street not looking where I am going and just bump into people as I go or is there a subtle Zurich pedestrian code I can subscribe too ? Enlighten yourself here Swiss Manners
7) Anyone fancy a pint ? Not Zurich this weekend, but incase you can plan to come to Basel, give me a shout.
Cant wait for the Xmas markets , anyone point me in teh right direction and date/time for the next one ? http://www.linker.ch/eigenlink/weihnachtsmarkt.htm
Enjoi & have a good time.
I miss ale as well. You can find London Pride in the Oliver Twist, but it's not all that. I'd abandon that quest and dive into the local beers . . . there are some more flavourful ones you might like: Bier Paul in Zürich, Appenzeller has a great selection. If you really are yearning for a proper pint, you might want to wend your way down to
Spiffing Ales , the real ale brewery run by a British expat.
Give me a shout if you want to go for a pint . . . Also as mentioned there are EF events, you might also want to try the Sunday pub quiz at the Shamrock.
Many thanks to all those who answered so quickly and efficiently , I am going to have to call you tram-members from now on :-)
Nice salt and vinegar crisps in Migros on this side of the Rustigraben.
Just hold the packet with your hand covering the 6.10 price tag for maximum enjoyment.
