Import duty on second-hand items?

Hi guys,

I suppose this was already asked/answered but my search efforts unfortunately didn't reveal much .

I'm thinking about buying second-hand hi-fi equipment from one of the EU countries, price about 5-10k€, and legally import it to Ch with my car (since it's too big to hide anyways ).

Does anybody know the proper procedure, and also what exactly will I be charged (only Ch VAT or more)?

Is it enough only to show proof of purchase with price when I drive to Ch border from EU?

How does it all work with used items without an official invoice from the shop?

It's my first time doing this so please be gentle.

Thanks in advance!

You stop at the border, show how much you paid, and pay Swiss VAT. There are no additional duties for such products.

For items with no receipt/invoice you can say how much they're worth and if you don't take the piss there shouldn't be any objections.

You can do the same with the QuickZoll app (Android, iOS). In the app you add the items (I think you can even upload the scan of the contract/receipt), the app will automatically calculate the VAT due and let you pay with your credit card. Then you can cross the border without stopping and declaring the items.

The only constraint is that you have to specify a two hour window for the time of crossing the border, but the entire process of payment takes less than a minute.

I was hoping it was as easy, but afraid it would be more complicated. Thanks!

Didn't know about the app, will for sure look into it. Thanks!

One more question, please: if I'm using the QuickZoll app to pay the VAT, do I use the price of the item or do I deduct german VAT off first (for items purchased in Germany)?

I.E. if item is 2000€, do I use 2000€ in the app or 1680€ (2000-19%)?

Thanks again!

The prices after deducting German VAT.

Tom

Thanks!

Hi guys,

Again me with a similar question, so I didn't want to open new thread.

Last time you were very helpful and fast.

So, similar question- if I buy second-hand item from EU, but this time it's under 300CHF, and shipped to CH via post or DHL, will I be charged any customs or import duties? Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, VAT will be charged if the value if over 60 CHF.

Only if German VAT was charged and appears on the sales receipt.

And potentially customs handling fees.

Thank you!

Yes, this is the annoying part. Thanks!
