Income Tax / Frontalier

Hi,

I am currently a French tax resident (although UK national) and have just signed a Swiss employment contract and for the first 6 months or so until we actually relocate will have "Frontalier" status with the role being based in Geneva.

I believe Income Tax is deducted at source in Geneva, but will that be deducted from month one, or do you pay tax for 2014 in 2015?

The reason I ask is that I will be paying French income tax in 2014 for 2013's earnings, and if possible would like to avoid paying double!

Hello,

The taxation at source in Geneva is on a monthly basis and you are exempt from French income tax for the amount already taxed in Geneva. But you do need to file a French income tax declaration and you will be taxed in France in case you have other income than the Geneva salary.

best regards

Patrick

Thanks Belgo, I get that, however take the following scenario:

January 2014

I'm paying about 600€ French income tax per month (on 2013's income)

I'll receive my first pay from the Geneva based job at the end of the month

Will my Swiss income tax for 2014 be deducted from this january pay, or is it the same system as the French (whereby my income tax for 2014 will be decalred and paid in 2015)?

I'm gonna have to pay twice for 12 months aren't I

No, it will be deducted each month based on earnings within that one month.

Bollocks

In other parts of Switzerland (Vaud and Neuchatel, not sure about Basel) frontaliers pay tax in France, and a small part paid back to the local Swiss authorities, from top of my head, 4,5%. It's all gone very quiet recently- but up to mid December, the French Govt had not yet paid the dues for 2012. Absolutely no news about this recently- from which I deduce they have not paid? Am I wrong- has anyone heard if they have or not?

Certainly our Commune's budget will be in serious trouble if it is not paid, and so will the Canton...WE are talking a huge sum here, and perhaps the only reason, with about 10% un-employed in the region, why there is not more anti-frontalier feelings. If Communes and Cantonal budgets are seriously affected- there will be trouble...

Edit: OH has just found info that payment was indeed made, 276 million, was paid on 21st December (for Neuchatel, Vaud, Basel, Bern, Solothurn, Valais and Jura)- to be split according to numbers of frontaliers. Money was due on 30th of June! 44.5 million was owed to Neuchatel- part of which will be paid back to my Commune.

The total sum due for 2012 was half a billion in total. The delay in payment cost Cantons and Communes dear- as many of them had to borrow money to implement local infrastructure agreed in the budget, and pay interest on such- whereas the French Govt paid no interest at all for the 6 months delay!

Here you pay here, and they kick back some to Italy, probably figure is safer than expecting Italy to send money back here!
