Increasing financial pressure eggs expensive?

I get my eggs from a local farm. It is super covenient for me as our family goes through a ton of eggs and these ones taste great. With my strange hours, I was happy to be able to go there and take the eggs that were left in the fridge self-service and pay with Twint even on Sundays or holidays.

Yesterday, I went to get eggs as usual, but they put a sign up that they will now only sell the eggs in the shop that is open on certain days due to theft. :frowning:

I read about increasing egg prices in the US, and the farm itself raised prices from 0.60 to 0.65 recently. I wonder if increase in theft is linked to financially squeezed consumers?

Maybe it’s Izzy’s honey thief!

In the meantime, someone replaced the TWINT QR code, and you’ve been twinting some random scammer :stuck_out_tongue:

@bossybaby Well…guess what, I wouldn’t be surprised! The guy disappeared from our area the same day that he enjoyed the stinging experience…

In general, I have observed in the last year that more and more of these ‘ladeli’ that had fresh produce (cheese, in particular) are not offering a lot of the products on these ‘help yourself’ shops-- you can buy them ‘on demand’ on their webshop (or call them, and pay by Twint to their mobile) and they will ‘leave the product out’ (on a relatively secluded location), in a paper bag, for you to pick up. Some of them in Graubunden have now cameras, with a large ‘you are being filmed’ notes on the walls. And yes, as @Spinal says, QR code fraud is also a concern… @Phil_MCR maybe you can ask them to use the ‘drop out bag’ in the evening of the day you buy the eggs?

I also saw something on the bluewin website the other day that the Federal government has increased the amount of eggs that can be imported because of a shortage here.

I, too, buy my eggs from a local farmer. Beautiful fresh bio 70g+ eggs.

A few months ago the farmer (while profusely apologizing) said that she had to raise the price by a Franc. Which is still less expensive than what I would pay at Coop for bio XL eggs.

She sells by order only, it took a while to get on her list because she only takes on the number of regular customers she knows her hens can supply. I have a standing order, she delivers the eggs to my door.

One of the perks of living in the boondocks.

According to POTUS last week, the price of eggs has come down 400%. Which means mathematically that you now receive one egg for free plus the money you previously needed to buy three eggs.

Maybe speak to the farmer?

I assume if you buy there regularly, they would be happy for you to pay for a month of eggs up front, and then leave you the eggs hidden somewhere in the shop for you to collect?

Wow! How much did you pay before? One frank more per egg seems crazy?

yes I read that too.

Maybe I misunderstood but I assumed she meant one franc more per dozen or tray or whatever quantity the eggs are sold in, one frank more per egg would be extortionate.

possibly.
Thing is we buy them in 4, 6, 10, 12 even 15 piece-packs.
I buy them in size of ten.

Gonna check next time if they went up. At least the the farmer-lady told Meloncollie. Migros, Coop etc. never bother.

I consume lots of eggs. Still, it is not the thing I safe money on so I’ll just have to live with it.

Ours went up from .60 to .65, so if a similar price increase maybe it was for 20 eggs.

Well to remember that the price of feed, medicine, and just about everything else it takes to keep a flock has gone up. For their intrinsic nutrient value, eggs are still a bargain…and toast soldiers!!

It used to cost 1/2 that across the border in France, but I don’t know if it changed post-covid. The farm eggs were so much better, it was well worth paying double the price.

I see you have been ‘Switzerlanded’ after more than a decade living here

In truth, the eggs are not quite comparable, as the Swiss ones are huge. Perhaps on a weight adjusted basis, they are only 33% more expensive

Sorry I was unclear - the price increase was per carton of 10. From CHF 6 for 10 eggs to CHF 7.

Still consider her farm fresh eggs to be a bargain, though.

Now I’m off to make a garden frittata for dinner…

Our farmer has a vending machine that dispenses the product after payment. And eggs don’t need tobe refrigerated unless they have been washed.

I’m not a fan of refrigerating eggs either.

I already have bees on my balcony. Not sure that the neighbours would appreciate also the hens, but, hey, what a great alternative to the bio- garbage disposal!
