Instant Pudding Mix

I just found a recipe for Johnny Rockets Chocolate Malt Shake and it requires Instant Pudding Mix (apparently that's what makes it so thick and creamy).

Any idea where I can get this (or at least something comparable) in Zurich?

The recipe also requires Malted Milk Powder, I found that Horlick, sold at Indian food markets tastes pretty close :-)

The best tasting and smoothest texture (to me) is the Dr. Oetker brand, but around here I can only find it at my tiny local Denner store. It works great when added to a cake mix to make the cake more rich. As you're in Zürich maybe your local Coop will have it?

Migros also has a store brand of instant pudding called Midor that is available in most of their stores. Not as good, imho but it works in a pinch.

You should find this one:

in pretty much every mid-sized to large Coop It's usually where the baking goods are, if I remember correctly. Comes in different flavors.

It might be worth double-checking what kind of instant pudding you need. There's the one that Samaire13 shows above, but there's also this one:

The one above is meant to set in a mold and be a bit jiggly. This one is meant to be creamy and would not stand up in a mold.

Thanks! I'll also check in a german store, as they usually have a wider selection of Dr. Oetker stuff.

Does anyone know if there exists something like a "base pudding mix" without a specific flavor in the US? I'd guess they would use something like that, as the recipe uses chocolate sirup to get the chocolate taste.

But if I can't find anything else, I'll just try the chocolate pudding mix.

I've not seen a base pudding mix in a package, but it's not hard to make your own. Here's a very basic recipe for from making it from scratch:

65 g white sugar

25 g cornstarch

pinch of salt

590 ml milk

tsp vanilla extract

Directions

Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a large saucepan. Slowly stir in milk. Bring to a boil, and cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until mixture thickens. Cook for 2 to 4 minutes more. Stir in vanilla.

Pour hot pudding into dessert glasses or molds that have been rinsed in cold water. Chill until firm (a couple of hours should do for a soft set). Less cornstarch = more creamy, more cornstarch = more wobbly.

I always make vanilla so I've never tried adjusting to add chocolate. I think you'd substitute some powdered cocoa for the sugar depending on how chocolate-y you want it.

Edit - This makes about 4 servings in small dishes, so you may want to adjust accordingly for your purposes.

Sounds good, I'll try it. Thanks!

That is not instant but you need to cook it. However, since I only shop at migros and they only have the terrible swiss pudding cremes I am more than happy to hear that coop has dr. oetker real pudding that you make with boiling milk.
