Internet Radio Advice

I would be interested to hear any opinions about internet radio -the stand-alone sets that can connect to your home internet wi-fi.

Do they work well in Switzerland?

What are the best and worst products and features?

Thanks.

You mean a DAB like device ?

DAB and BBC Radio 4 possible ?

DAB digital radio from the UK

I've a Revo Heritage and it looks beautiful, with plenty of tech wizardry inside to keep you satisfied. Wifi connection can get patchy when surfing on your computer, but I'm very pleased with the tone and it's intuitive controls. It has no battery, which necessitates a cable. Dunno if others come with powerpacks.

They're a bit pricey but if you love radio you'll be delighted with 20,000+ stations on call. The Revo's come with a free LastFM trial subscription, but it doesn't cover Switzerland. iPod, DAB+, FM and auxillary options all straight forward. It's not the greatest sound from the mono speaker; Revo make a more modern designed radio which won laurels, but mine is as much for the Abba video look as the functionality.

An Internet Radio can (in theory) receive any station from anywhere in the world; a DAB Radio is limited to what you can pick up in your area.

My Yamaha amp has internet radio. I can choose stations directly on it or via my PC.

There are many many stations. Too many to choose from. There was another thread somewhere about the favourites of forum members.

It takes about 5 seconds to buffer up and then plays. I choose stations with the best quality, and I have been very impressed so far (given my low expectations). I listen to radio stations from california, NY, Australia, UK, etc. Fantastic.

My amp is located in the living room, where the internet speed is about 5-10mbps. I've had a handful of reception problems at the beginning, but I moved my wireless router to a better location and doubled the speed, and so far there has been no problems.

I did pay a bit more to get this amp for its internet radio feature. Now that I have the new Apple TV, I found out that it has internet radio too. So in theory, now I could have bought a cheaper amp and connect the apple TV to it to get internet radio.

Get one!

Listening to Newstalk in Dublin right now and it's perfect. Internet radio is a great invention allowing us to stay up to date with Dublin and London but some stations will detect your Ip address and not allow reception. For example, in some cricket test series the BBC commentary won't work here

I have two different internet radios, one based on the Reciva chipset and the other based on the Pure platform. Its important to understand that they are not actually radios, but ARM based linux computers with a loud speaker attached. Their sole job is to acccess the internet via a portal and stream live radio. You could do a similar job with an el cheapo netbook and a freeware program (e.g. Screamer radio ).

or a pda, phone etc etc anything that run windows mobile, andriod or iphone etc will run as a internet radio just fine, lots of free apps for the ipod that do it too.

Another thread that the OP might be interested in reading up:

US radio stations online

I think we once had a chat about those WinCE based carputers what would be cool is a program that can stream internet radio via a 3G data signal. Since 3G can be quite choppy on the move, it would need to cache a good 30 seconds or so, but just imagine being able to listen to Radio 4 or LBC on the way to work

and thus all you need to have is a dock-speakers thing for your iPhone, for example.

ipod will do that just fine, well a jailbroken one will or of course an iphone with a decent dataplan!!

I use an iPOD touch, a couple of small speakers and the Orange LiveRadio app.

Works brilliantly, never have latency problems or indeed any problems.

The only thing I'm going to do is get a good quality ipod-dockable speaker to provide power to the iPOD and give better audio quality.

Probably the Bower and Wilkins mini Zeppelin .

Try any of the logitech devices, they have several models & prices depending on what you need

Hello,

I have an AE (Acoustic Energy) internet radio which is based on the Reciva chipset which I am very happy with. In fact as castro quite correctly states these are not really radios but are devices with a linux operating system which are programmed to connect to a web site in my case www.reciva.com .

If you go to the site you will see a list of all the countries covered with a sublist of stations available. I like this system as I can browse stations in other counties too. However I must admit that i have preprogrammed about five stations which i listen to most of the time. you can also send a request to reciva to have your station added to the list or if you register you can run your owm list of favourites.

The AE is a bit retro but I have mine now for more than 4 years with any real problems I had to replace the power cable once, overheats due to being plugged in 24 hours a day.

The only downside is that it does not have a internal battery so you have to unplug it and then plug in and reboot every time you move around the house so mabye next time I would like a battery.

Station changing is not very fast as it has to buffer and this can take a couple of minutes sometimes. i tried a Pure based model once and it was faster. most models let you also connect to music from you PC and play this via the radio but this is not a function I use

Good luck and enjoy your new radio.

John

another great program for internet radio (free)

I also has the advantage to be portable (can be install on a USB stick)

I have a Terratec Noxon in the kitchen. Works perfectly over WiFi.

I have a Pure Sensia Internet/FM/DAB radio which right now is on sale for CHF 379,- at Digitec - as long as they are in stock.

A good deal as normal price is 499,-

Check it out here

Added: Forgot to mention that the sound quality is very good. I have a Squeezebox as well but the sound from it is not as good as from the Sensia.

I would highly recommend the Terratec Noxon . Its so simple to use. Also if you are an apple fan, wait until after Christmas for the "Air Play"

I use...

http://www.pure.com/products/product...ighlight=evoke

Works great...wakeup to BBC radio 4 or a back up beep if the internet connection goes down over night..

No bright light when you sleep and nice snooze/light activating bar.

Not really designed for pumping tunes...but can easily take the output to another device for that..

I use it all the time..
