iPhone application recommendations

So I have my iPhone and I've finished flicking through photo's and got bored of trying to learn to use the keyboard so I guess I need to install some apps.

So far I have iPint, which I've tired off already. I also have the Facebook app with doesn't work and keeps asking me to re-enter my username and password so I've got bored of that too.

What other apps should I try? Is there a IM client that supports Jabber or MSN?

ok i unlocked my first gen iphone last night and got some apps.

shazam is amazing, it is voodoo black magic. basically, if a song is playing on the radio or television and you do not know who it is by, just open shazam and it listens to the song for 12 seconds then it can identify it. i was sceptical but it works beautifully.

secondly, the remote control app is also very clever, you can use it to control your itunes music from the iphone. seamless, and without hesitation. truly cool.

and both free.

Agreed. Time to start getting airport expresses for every room in the house.

oh, and if you are working in finance, the bloomberg app is very slick also, and again free.

I'm really waiting for Gizmo to release a iPhone client, that would be truly great.

Doesn't work like that, you have to buy them or follow the helpful tip given in the iPhone 3G FAQ thread .

i followed this youtube clip to create my ringtones

Thanks, that was completely what i needed.

For what it is worth, here are my staples, the apps I cannot live without:

WeatherBug Facebook Wordpress (for my blog) Wine Log (use to take snap shot of wines we drink, then tag then) Currency (checks daily conversion rates) Remote Control AIM Bank of America Mobile MLB.com Convertor (need to convert US to metric) That is it for my most important. I hope this helps

How about this for extra special willy waving?

iPhone bling

I'm interested in this app. As I understand it's simple a database of wines you have drunk, it doesn't offer any reviews or lookups?

I am a member of an Apple Mac users group. In their newsletter today they posted this, which I thought might interest a few of you...

Hackers working to develop software that unlocks the iPhone for use

on non-approved networks and in order to install unauthorised

applications are warning users not to install iPhone Software 2.0.1.

The iPhone Dev team

"If you own a first generation (2G iPhone), no matter what you do

now, you don’t have to worry, the next PwnageTool will get you where

you want even if it you prematurely updated. 2G is completely pwned

at every conceivable level and you’ll always be OK. But if you own a

3G iPhone and are looking for unlock in the near future, don’t use

Apple’s update yet," the team warns.

"PwnageTool v2.0.1 does not work with version 2.0.1 of the iPhone or

iPod update from Apple," they add. "We will release an update to

PwnageTool when the testing has been completed and all applied

changes have been checked for safety."

Maybe we should add the cost of these too.

As somebody who primarily uses OSS I resent paying for any applications, you could also call me tight I guess. Donating, fine, paying no.

Lockbox - free - stores passwords, it's pretty simple.

I've tried this and am surprised it got good reviews to be honest, I find it pretty pathetic for the reasons you mentioned. I don't really see the use of an IM client that doesn't run in the background either.

Be sure to let us know.

Has anyone tried Evernote? I hear it's just been updated.

My App tip - Starmap is pretty awesome for telling what the stars and constellations are called, also other things like metero showers etc.

*I have not tried this yet*

Look at Simplifymedia, details here . It claims to be able to access your itunes music collection remotely. If it works (and I am in work so will have to wait to try it) then who cares about memory size?

It's currently free for the first 100,000 downloads, $3.99 after that.

thanks - downloading as we speak. Won't be able to try it until tonight, though

woah, potential killer app!

Edit: Just noticed that is requires Rhythmbox, hopefully it is possible to get this running on a machine that doesn't have X installed.

Awesome! I'm excited about this app

my apps of the day:

- iTeletext (apparently only available through iTunes at the moment). Costs 6.60.- CHF but is well worth the money, if you ask me. Gives you full access to the teletext services of many European TV stations - in Switzerland they offer SF1, TSI 1, TSI 2, Sat 1 CH, Kabel 1 CH, Cern-labs Teletext. In the UK: BBC Ceefax 1, BBC Ceefax 2, MANU Text. Ireland: RTE 1. I tested it and it works as advertised
