I have a first generation iPhone, which I had bough way back in 2008, when iPhone was just launched. It was a gift from someone special and is therefor very very dear to me...
Three weeks back, I dropped it when I was rushing to catch a tram and the screen is now cracked. The damage is superficial, thankfully, since I can still use it without any trouble. I would like to get the screen repaired.
I took the phone to the Apple stores and retailers but I was told that since the iPhone 2G was never launched in switzerland, they will not be able to help me. I even requested them to check if they can get the kit from US (I know they sell it there), but they flatly refused...
Would anyone here know of some place near Zurich, where I can get the cracked screen replaced?
Lots of people sell repair kits on ebay for about 100CHF - there are also utube videos with instructions, example, kit ebay 390179460968 - never used these guys so this is not a reference just an example
We've done a youtube repair. Works well if you're not the clumsy type. Just look at the instructions carefully and do the repair in front of your computer screen.
This one looks OK for the 2G , I've only opened a 3G and 3GS before though, so can't guarantee, obviously. You need a sucker to take off the screen from the 3G and 3GS.
Be very careful you don't rip open the two parts of the phone as they are connected with ribbon cables which can easily be damaged.
As for getting the spare parts: ... well, we ordered a new home button part off ebay for a couple of CHFs two weeks ago and unfortunately it hasn't arrived yet (from HongKong supposedly). Maybe someone here knows a reputable place?
The 1st gen are slightly more tricky to take apart than the later ones. My advice it to buy a new glass from Hong Kong (ebay search->advanced options->located in) for 5 pounds inc post:
