i was thinking of buying an ipod touch as a present for somebody. as this person isn't technically savvy, i would need to set it up first.
since i've never owned an ipod/iphone i'm not sure what the requirements are, but i know that you have to attach it to a pc to activate etc. i was wondering if it is necessary to set up a credit card straight away as i wouldn't want to attach my CC number to the ipod.
The only thing you need with an ipod is that the lucky person has a valid email account which helps you create an itunes account. You would probably want to set it up directly on their computer.
There is also the possibility of buying itunes gift cards instead of linking it to your credit card.
You are better off setting it up with them, as the ipod will link to the PC that you set up with. If you download anything on it, then when you sync to the recipient's itunes, you'll loose all the stuff you may have loaded on it.
Anyway, I thought Begga was tecnically savvy, and you've already caused enough of a stir
is it possible to set up ahead of time so that they can use internet/email (via wifi), facetime etc? i don't think they will ever sync it with itunes.
it would be nice if it was charged up and ready to use (and so i can explain how to use it immediately) rather than having to fiddle about for a couple of hours on the computer first which might already put them off it.
Why are you buying an iPod touch for a non-savvy person, wouldn't it make more sense to get an iPod classic that's much easier to use if they're likely not going to use any of the features the touch has?
I'll give it 3 weeks before its put in a cupboard. Cant she use email though on the computer she already has? Or cant you permanently upload photos to a photo upload and let her see them there?
that's the problem, my mum can't really use a computer. i'm hoping an ipod/ipad will be simpler. e.g. no complications on having to log in, how to load up email etc.
in theory you have to do the same thing on an ipod, but it should be a lot less intimidating.
If its for a non tech savvy person to use internet email etc... and not for music then why don't you get them an iPad. I really think the iPads are perfect for the non techy older gen who want to get on email and browse the web a little. An iPod touch will be too small for a non techy person to have the patience.
Although i suspect the severe price diff from an iPod touch to an iPad will be a major issue if it's a gift you are buying
Maybe so, i'm just thinking along the lines of how my family react to stuff like this. My grandmother got the hang of a computer but she has a mental block when it comes to things like phones... I can't imagine how badly she would react to an iPod touch. Then there's making sure the WiFi is configured before she gets it, then there's troubleshooting any potential connection issues... then there's learning the iPhone interface.
I reckon it would be much, much simpler for her to learn how to open a browser and email program on a regular Windows computer... hell, you could even teach her using remote access to control her PC while she's on the telephone to you.
undecided between ipod and ipad at the moment. ipad obviously has a bigger screen, but is more 'computer like'. i'm also not sure if ipad has facetime (yet).
but i think regardless of ipod/ipad, they would have the same setup issues.
my mum now refuses to use the computer. she's a bit scared of it/scared of breaking it. but she has no problems reading text messages etc. on her mobile phone. i have sent some photos by MMS, but the quality is a bit crappy.
A regular mobile phone with basic SMS, and an iPod touch are two completely different things.. I bet she'll be just as confused as with the PC! Good luck though.
I maybe going out on a limb here but if your mom is not compsavvy splash out a bit more and get her a I-pad, old Mrs Slammer has one and loves the thing.
Every time I visit my mum I get her to repeat mobile phone and internet related activities again and again till she becomes comfortable. Each visit I teach her new things. So get her to repeat stuff in front of you again and again and then she will be good to go.
If all fails take your mum back to the shop and get a refund
Have you thought about a photo frame which is easy to use. Buy two memeory cards, give your mum one already loaded up, load up the other oen and send it to her and she returns the first one for rfeformatting.
My mum loves it and she even learnt how to change memory cards....
You will have to activate it with itunes. Then whenever she tries to buy something it will show your email address and ask for a password. This will happen with free apps as well.
You will attach a itunes account with it which will most probably have a credit card attached to it, but it can't be used without your password.
The iPod touch is an EXCELLENT gift for a non tech savvy relative. The thing is so simple to use it's not even funny. My four year old niece picks one up and start playing with it. It's that simple.
The iPad would be much nicer. But the lack of facetime is a big negative. I read on macrumours there might be a facetime version released in January. Maybe you could upgrade her then
