I really need your help, I will be in Geneva this January, and i am offered for a job as a babysitter for a 6 month old baby, and at the same time a cleaner of the house. I would just like to ask any opinion if my salary of 2,400 chf gross/monthly is right? or less than the minimun wage? it's like 15 chf/hour.
I'm so worried because i will be staying out with the family, meaning to say i have to pay for my own board and food etc. ,and it's so expensive to live in Geneva. How much will be the tax and any cheap Insurance here in Geneva? I'm wondering how much is the minimun wage per hour of this job like mine. thanks a lot, i really need help
Live in, it would be acceptable, live-out it's not. How many hours per week are you working for that money ? can you take a second job ?
Live-able wage, to live out of the home, for full time work would be around 3500chf. 2400 is a 'student' wage, for someone untrained who is under 25 but is doing studies and working part-time...
For these hours and live out this amount is low even for Geneva! (maybe an EF member form Geneva knows better so let's wait for an answer).
A Babysitter shouldn't work these hours. A Nanny does.
A Babysitter works less hours and doesn't do the cleaning (unles she discused it with the family and she is ok about it but then she should be paid more).
A Nanny works these hours and cleaning and cooking just for the kids, but if she would do cooking and cleaning for the parents also then she would be a Nanny Housekeper (common agreement).
Anyway, just calculate: taxes, insurance, rent, bills, food, transportation, phone, personal expenses and you should also still have something left until the next paycheck!
I think you have to pay taxes and medical insurance--the employer should pay the medical insurance in case you don't have your own that you have to make here! But your employer should pay taxes and so should you.
Don't hurry! Think about the pro and contra and think about what would you do if you don't like this family and you want to leave and you have no place to stay or no money?!
Just to give you a hint, a cleaning lady gets between CHF 25.00 and CHF 30.00 gros (according to the region) an hour. I think this wage is far too low and borders to exploitation. With a 40 hours week and no definition on the time frame you will have difficulties in finding a second job too.
Thank you for your concern, maybe I just made mistake in putting the right word,
I am a nanny, and do some household chores too,I really find this salary too low because I have to pay for everything, the option theygave me was like this :
If I stay in I would get an amount of 2000 chf gross, but then they will deduct it for my insurance and tax so they said the clear money I will get is ranging from 1200-1400 chf,
If I stay out I would get 2400 and I will bear everything, I have chosen stay out because have some personal reasons on that,
In Geneva for a nanny job how much is the minimum wage per hour?gross.
If you are a baby sitter you shouldn't get involved with chores and if you do you should get more as previously pointed out. CHF2400 before all insurances and rent is not sustainable and you will be forced to get another job.
4000 gross is a minimum live-able salary for a full-time job.
If you are 'nannying' that means sole-charge of a child. I'm assuming it's only one child. How old is the child ? How will you get a break during the day. If it's only one child, and they have a good routine, then it might be possible to get a small break each day when the child is napping. However, by age 2.5 or 3 the child may no longer be having a nap during the day, so you work all day without any sort of break.
I agree with others, the offer is far too low and exploitative.
To give another comparison. 3500 - 4000 is a basic wage for an untrained person in their 20's with no other financial responsibilities. The base salary for a qualified Nanny would be more like 5000 per month, and a qualified nanny looking after more than one child would probably not agree to do any housework other than looking after the basic needs of the child (for example, the professional nanny who I know might prepare a light meal for herself and the child, but would never agree to cooking for the whole family...

Let's not forget that the OP is thinking to go to Geneva so we should give her some clear prices in Geneva. In the German part, salaries and living expenses are different from the French part.
In Geneva, a Haushaltangestellte (Au Pair, Babysitter, Nanny, Housekeeper) is paid less so we shouldn't make the OP think that she could earn 4000chf when in fact she could earn 3000chf.
PS: OP- there are some threads on this forum ( make sure that they are the latest and they are for Geneva/ French part) about Nanny salaries so you should do a little bit of research and see what would be the right salary for you.
Geneva is one of the cantons that have laws on minimum salaries and other treatments of au-pairs and domestic workers. From the work you would be doing, it seems you would fall under the category of domestic worker. Here is the link to the contract de travail for domestic worker, which species the minimums on page 4. Thus, for someone with no qualifications, the minimum is 3,635 chf per month. Other conditions such as vacation days, etc. are also noted within. I think they are trying to take advantage of you.
Thank you for your concern, let me explain to you the reason why I wanted to come to Geneva,as a nanny for this family.
This family is my employer here in Slovakia too,as a nanny and doing some household chores, they are working in U.N
Then this month my boss applied for U.N Geneva, they approved it so they will be there this january,so they ask me if I want to come with them coz they said they want me,and if I will not come with them,I will not have anymore documents to be legally here in slovakia since they will leave from this country
so I asked them how much they could give me if I stay in or out so they quoted me first 2300 for stay out and 2000 stay in all are gross,I really find it so so low that I ask for 2500 gross stay out but they just couldn't give it to me so they opted for 2400 and then I accepted it,bcoz I will be jobless and no document if I will not come with them to geneva
now I am helpless bcoz I have agreed already for stay out with that salary,I really told them its very low but they said they are just calculating their salary, is the medicla insurance suppose to be their obligation to me other than giving me salary?or with that gross still to be deducted for my insurance?
and if i would go to them for, can i search for another family employer?
I am filipina by the way,
Its so nice to find someone to talk to with this matter,
I'm not sure how your status works. Are they sure that they can even get you a legitimate permit for Switzerland ?
I know of a family here in Zurich who had a nanny from the Phillipines, and the wife is Japanese and the husband German, and they could not get a permit for their nanny, even though she had worked with them for many years...she came over on a tourist visa and then she had to go back to Japan and start a new job because they were refused the permit.
As stated, there are rules in Geneva specifically related to this situation. There is a minimum salary requirement for domestic workers and certainly you need to make sure you have a proper permit and papers for switzerland, and the rules will be quite different to Slovakia.
How long will you come to Switzerland for ? What options do you have if you want to go home ?
If it's not legal, you can't be expected to stick to an agreement. I really think you will struggle on that salary to live-out.
Your health insurance will cost around 250chf per month. How many children will you be caring for ? Is your employer really working you only 40 hours per week, or do you do more for no salary ? Do they give you paid holidays (4 or 5 weeks per year) - can you afford to go home to visit your family ? Do you send money home or save some ? Are you studying, will they pay for language lessons ?
If you got into trouble, lost your job or quit, could you pack up your life and go elsewhere, or would you find yourself in an extremely difficult situation ? Are your employers kind, supportive and realistic, or do they work you hard and pay you very little consideration ? Do you enjoy your work, will you have a social life and enjoy your time when you are not working ? How many children are you caring for ?
