Is Car Export required?

Dear All,

I was going through a lot of threads here but I was not able to find someone with similar case to mine:

1. I have a car declared with a household effect (form 13.20)

2. I failed registration due to a bit of rust - however the cost to repair it are higher than value of the car.

3. The car is therefore still on foreign EU plates.

4. As 1 year is coming to an end I wanted to bring the car back to the EU country of origin and have it maintained by my friends for now and then potentially selling it in the future there.

5. Do I have to register an export of this car if so what is the procedure?

If you think the export is required, what would be the consequences of not doing it?

No...

When I returned a car to the UK, I stopped at the border to see if the Swiss would stamp the paperwork I got when I imported the car. They said nothing to do, so did nothing & never heard anything.

Thanks a lot for prompt answers!

One more quick question: does anyone (potentially Strassenverkehrsamt or Zollamt?) keep track of imported cars that are not registered one year after the import date?

So assuming I am not going to export the car but just leave it here on private land and do not drive it at all, would that be treated as a violation? It is very difficult for me to find any regulations with this regard.

Or is it only more that if police will control me driving the car I am in trouble?

At some point in the future you will have to get rid of it. Probably it will be much more expensive to do it at that time. Your original plan to take it out of the country now it's much better.

As far as I understand the law (not very good ) you are not doing a traffic offense, but one of not paying import taxes.

- if it's on your land I don't think anyone will find it (look at the posts above, it seems no one is looking into this kind of data)

- but you are in possession of property for which you didn't pay taxes, so you are doing a tax evasion

Violation of what?

If you drive an unregistered vehicle, that is certainly a violation.

Tom

Storing it on private property w/o a license plate or even with a foreign plate is perfectly o.k. according the Swiss regulations. Because of this I do not think the StVA/SAN keeps track of the imported but not yet Swiss pleated cars. In the end it is your very own responsibility that the car is only used in good order on the Swiss public roads.

A genuine question, if we leave the question of control and we just look at the legality:

if I import for example a watch, I have to pay taxes. If I bring in the first year it is exempt as part of household. Probably I cannot say, yeah I bought it in other country and here it is (the watch) just temporary, even if I live here.

Isn't it the same with a car? If I brought it here and put it on my land, I have practically imported it? Or are vehicles a special category?

What is than with bicycle?

If it was declared as part of you household goods you have legally imported it.

Registration is a separate and unrelated issue.

Tom

In general (there are always exceptions) you have imported it at the very moment you crossed the border of the customs area with the goods. So you have practically imported it much sooner than you have thought.

Vehicles are mostly the same as a watch, a book, or a TV. How ever as they are a bit more valuable and subject to duty and vehicle tax the formalities are a bit different. If you do not follow the proper procedure it is commonly called smuggling. Temporary imports by tourists for the own use during the stay are mostly form less.

There are no special provisions for a regular push bicycle. If you import it on your own you have to voluntarily declare it when the value of all goods you import is more than CHF 300.

Reviving an old thread because of some extra info and questions (read the OP for context).

I am planning to do the same, and because things were unclear I just contacted the customs office and asked my questions regarding what needs to be done when a car on 13.20 with foreign license plates leaves Switzerland permanently. Here is the official answer:

" If there is an intention to sell the vehicle abroad, it must be officially re-exported. This means that the vehicle must be registered with Swiss customs with the "e-dec web export" export declaration. "

So that's fine, no problem.

My remaining question is what happens from the EU country's point of view? Import and export are done via the swiss customs, so I _assume_ that the EU country doesn't care (because they are not aware) that a car was exported then reimported? Or does the swiss customs talk to the EU, and they notify them somehow?

In other words, when I officially export the car from Switzerland, do I have to declare it for import at the border and pay taxes, or not? Does anyone have any personal experience with this?
