Is Chomage considered as Social Benefit ? (hinderance to Naturalisation)

Greetings All,

I plan to apply for Naturalisation in the coming months, however I have recently been made redundant and will be on chomage soon.

There is a condition of Naturalisation to have not taken any social benefits in the past 3 years or during the procedure (which can take several years).

"...ne pas être à la charge de l'assistance publique dans les 3 ans précédant le dépôt de votre demande de naturalisation et pendant toute la durée de la procédure."

Does this restriction on social benefits include Chomage ? I previously thought YES, however today was told NO, because Chomage is an insurance.

If Yes, then it means one has to choose between chomage and naturalisation- tough choice.

Any clarity offered ?

The information you've been given is indeed correct.

Chômage/RAV is considered an insurance and not a social benefit.

If the decision comes down to having a roof over your head and food on the table or obtaining Swiss nationality, I think the former takes precedence over the latter.

I can also confirm that it is not considered social assistance. I am in the process in obtaining a C permit. I did take unemployment benefits last year and it is not mentioned in the statement I got from from the authorities.
