Is it legal to burn styrofoam?

I have quite a bit of styrofoam lying around. I want to get rid of it.

Because it is so bulky, I'm thinking of pouring methylated spirit on it and setting it on fire to get rid of it.

Any better ways of getting rid of it?

Take it to ikea. They recycle it (or at least claim to).

Most local authorities take back styrofoam. Ask at your Gemeinde. Do not burn it, there is a heavy pollution fine!

That's one option. Although I'm not convinced that driving to Ikea and back to recycle styrofoam is better for the environment...

Most Gemeinde recycling locations take it for free.

And you think pouring metho on it and starting a fire is better

Who said drive? Cycle, horse and cart or even public transport ... it may be bulky but at least it weighs next to nothing ..

(This week the solar panels for our super energy efficient new house were delivered .... by helicopter )

Only foreigners would ask this question, real Swiss would just burn it.

Tom

And blame the smoke & smell on the foreigners that just moved in

If burning it isn't illegal, it should be. It will give off all manner of toxic chemicals.

Take it to one of the recycling centres as mentioned by others. The pollution from transporting it there will be far less harmful.

Mmmm... I love the smell of burning styrofoam in the morning.

Be careful if you burn it. I'm sure it will give off lots of toxic fumes. Some friends of mine once burnt their kid's wooden swing set in their backyard and got really sick from the fumes. They didn't realize it's not good to burnt treated wood, I guess (?).

The fumes from burning pressure treated wood are arsenic

Also beware old painted timber as the paint may contain lead.

Basically, don't burn any processed products. Take them for proper disposal/recycling

It is illegal. Obviously. Only 'that weird guy in the village that nobody likes' Swiss would burn it regardless. Or old people who grew up with smoking in hospitals etc. and don't care about being green or within the law.

This would take care of the bulk part. after just throw it is trash or recycling

Here is the environmentally-friendly way to take it for recycling

I don't know if it is illegal, but I suspect it might be as it gives off a lot of nasty stuff.

At one time I was working for a company that manufactured it and bottom line from H+S was that if this stuff every caught fire, you were to get your mask on and get the h**l out of there! The fact that they actually gave us masks says it all!

Different canton, the place convenient to us for recycling has a styrofoam box in the back, it is not advertised & it is not around the front part. There are men working in that recycling place, different to supermarket type bottle/can recycling place.

Wait, so instead of just recycling it, you propose to buy some chemicals to dissolve it in and then take the toxic slurry to the recycling place?

Fixed that for you

Pour petrol on it, it melts the styrofoam.
