Is spouse of B-type visa allowed to work?

Hi All,

I might be moving to Switzerland and hence I am trying to find as much information possible to make a informed decision.

If I decide to move, I'll get a B-visa. I am an Indian national. Will my wife be allowed to work.

If the answer is yes, how easy is it for a MBA graduate, which my wife is, with 3 years experience, but who only knows English, to get a job in Switzerland, in Geneva.

Also, how much salary I should expect. I am an electronics engineer with 9 years experience. What is the a salary I should expect so that later on after few months, when I start getting idea of how much actually people of my skills get in Switzerland, I don't feel bad?

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forum!

My guess is...eventually, but I only quickly scanned the first page of the sticky in this subforum.

Non-EU Permits - a few bullet points.

Response #18 seems quite relevant to your situation. There might be more information in the subsequent pages of the thread though that very specifically address your question.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Jetset. I am going to keep a close watch on that thread :-)

What makes you think that?

Because the sponsor told me that thats what I'll get. I am being transferred from UK to Swiss, if I accept.

The sponsor has no say in which permit type is issued.

It's Switzerland, not Swiss.

Not completely correct swissbob, the sponsor can explicitly apply for a B permit, how ever it is the prerogative of the authorities to choose to issue an L (this happening is very rare)

That means I was one of the unlucky rare ones

The form may indeed have a B on it. But I didn't say they couldn't apply - I said they have no say in what is issued.

this happening is very common .

Since quota reductions when the bilateral agreements with the EU states came into force it is quite normal for a new employee to get an L for the first 1 or 2 years on the understanding that an L permit is better than no permit at all .

Hi All,

Thanks all for your inputs. Things are much clearer to me now.

If I get B-visa, my spouse will have the permission to work (whether she finds a job or not, thats another matter). If I get L-permit, she wont have the permission. In that case, will that visa allow her to enroll herself into some masters courses?

Am I correct in assuming the fees structures of the university are as shown in this link below:

http://www.swissuniversity.ch/grants...rship-fees.htm

Are there any other costs (not living and transport etc.) to be considered?

Thanks.

Try to forget the term visa - this is only required for entry to the country.

For a masters university course a student permit must be applied for.

Thanks swissbob. Ok, I don't want to use the terms which I don't know the meaning of, properly yet.

How difficult/easy it is to get this 'student permit' after already arriving in Switzerland (I was just trying to save few alphabets' typing and hence saving entropy-increase) as B (or L) permit-dependent-visa.

Very easy.

Thanks again.

Am I right in assuming the fees are as shown in the link

The B permit is your golden ticket. However it is difficult though not impossible to get English speaking job. The most frustrating thing for your wife will be getting a job that she really likes.

good luck and best wishes to both of you, Melissa
