…Simon Stadler seems to think so, (Christsozialen Mitte Partei n the Nationalrat for Uri) wants to impose a further fee on top of the Vignette for people who drive through CH on their way south without stopping and spending money in the country and clogging the roads.
It seems that the CHian parlament has accepted the proposal.
CH is already a place to avoid due to the insane prices, now even more so.

Switzerland is expensive, that’s why tourists do not stop and do not consume anything. They just drive through and add to the 12 km traffic jam at Gotthard. It’s a good thing to scary them away.
40 CHF is nothing for someone who is going for holidays by car through the whole Europe.

The tolls from Geneva to Paris, single journey, one way is more than the annual Swiss Vignette. Increase to at least CHF100.

You already have the 40€ Vignette that you buy for even a single trip through CH, add other tolls and the price if a coffee and CH gets just insanely expensive.
Things like this will hurt the tourist industry…
Imagine someone driving to Italy through CH thinking: “nice place, I’d like a holliday here” and then getting whipped by the prices. That person is going to avoid CH at all cost.
Don’t have to imagine it, happens every day. How about 400 Fr for the road Toll and a compulsory overnight pit stop in the Wallis? The whole idea is to get transit people to take the train. Either load up your own car or hire one when you get to your destination.
The CH vignette is objectively the most value for money thing in CH, even if one is just driving through once.

Who would ever consider taking a train for a holiday?
Imagine driving from a town in Holland to Como… 4x people + a dog… it’s a day long trip if you drive slowly, stop for lunch somewhere nice, etc…
Do it by train, and it becomes a stress. Get to AMS station. Take train to DE, change, change again. Get delayed. Pay a fortune in train tickets. Arrive in Milan, change again. Get pickpocketed at Milano Centrale. Eventually get to como 2 days later.

Even at 100chf for the vignette it would almost certainly still be cheaper and easier than taking alternative routes to bypass Switzerland.
I can’t see a price hike for transit drivers putting many people off to be honest, 40chf is really cheap for effectively 14 months of motorway driving in Switzerland.

And also most of the cars with NL numbers have bikes on them.
Basically the initiative blocks the south transit routes, Austria is becoming more and more inhospitable to transit traffic with Blockabgertigung (traffic is let through in blocks) and motorway only, fine for leaving the motorway due to traffic jams or stopped traffic.
Noise limit of 95db on some roads and tbe general feeling of not being welcome.
What about Autobahns with tourist and Swiss registered lanes. Tourist lanes are limited to 80KPH and heavy fines for entering the Swiss only lanes…

Given that there are frequent tailbacks running into the 3 to 4 hour mark at the various tunnels, tourists price this into their trips through the country, I think they definitely have the stomach to take a reasonable increase on their toll cost. All the extra wear and tear on the roads, the added pollution, etc., with little to no expenditure within the country. Maybe a quick coffee while they stop for a pee break / EV charging.

Best just to ban the Dutch from Swiss roads totally.
They are an absolute menace to cyclists and other road users here, drive aggressively and the only reason they don’t have the highest cyclist death rate in the world is because the cyclists are totally segregated.
They take their own food on holiday to so would add nothing to the economy if they did stop off on the way.
Switzerland is too cheap for cars that do many kilometers.
Road pricing would help, but not only on freeways. Every owner of a street (Gemeinde, Kanton, Bund, private owners) should be able to charge for usage. Today this could be done easy with an app. Price would depend on vehicle type, time and road.
If you really want to stand 2-4 hours before the Gotthard it should cost you more than the rest of your holidays, let’s see what people do then. If you hardly make enough money to pay for standing every morning in the queue to get to work, let’s see what people do. The price can be used to steer traffic.
Private cars, in my opinion, reached end-of-life. I own two of them, but hardly use any. But I pay almost the same as if I would do 200k kilometers per year. It is way too cheap anyhow.
It will probably infringe some bilateral agreements with EU.
The current economic model for road tax and tolls in Switzerland is the “all you can eat” model (pay once, use as much as you want), the only difference being that the entry ticket is very cheap.
Re Gotthard, when I drove my car from Athens to Basel there was a massive queue in the Gotthard so I opted to go over the Alps, and then under them in the car ferry. Was a cool little detour which took maybe 1.5h, and certainly beat sitting in a car queue for hours under August sun, and that drive over Furka etc is phenomenally beautiful.

You seem to forget that those who merely drive through clogging up the roads are not wanted in the first place.
If that additional fee is the deciding factor for your route, you don’t have the budget and maybe you should stay home to begin with.

I guess this is bilateral? i.e. should France stop/discourage Swiss from driving through France to the UK? Or Germany to Poland, NL, etc? Heck, Italians suffer from Swiss going south all the time!

You mean passersby? Frankly this is pretty shocking to read, what’s next, attacking “outsiders” who pass through a ghetto neighbourhood like it happens in other parts of the world (including in the US), you want CH to be like that?
