Is the Consumption of Dog Meat Legal in Switzerland?

Buy filet (tenderloin) or entrecote, in a large (1kg+ chunk), and grill over charcoal after seasoning and brushing with olive oil.

And serve RARE!

(tartar or carpaccio is also nice)

Tom

Yes, you will.

Young horse (puledro) is sold as such, and much more tender!

Tom

I'll start by saying that you're right - too many dog slaughters in Asia (as well as other animals) are deliberately painful. It's usually in cases where the meat is supposed to increase male potency - not universal by an means. It actually costs more as a specialty....

However, that's an issue with indifference to animal suffering, not an issue with the type of animal. It's not much different from the disgusting slaughterhouse abuse exposes which crop up regularly in the US. Just because an animal is destined to be meat does not warrant abuse, regardless of the animal and where it is killed.

What bugs me is that the 'oh it's a cute doggie' thing often eclipses the suffering issue, and as we've seen earlier in this thread, often conceals a deep cultural bias and is used to maintain a sense of cultural superiority.

I am vegetarian (except some snails & caterpillars hiding in my salad). I do not mind if people eat meat. Actually I wish there were some dog eaters (or cannibals as makeup artist calls) back in my country, we have problems with stray dogs :-).

meat is meat is meat....

Personally I don't like "farmed meat" (cow, pig, chicken, lamb) so much but more a juicy elk, rabbit or a deer - the wilder the better!

normally people don't want to eat "cute animals"...I say the cuter the tastier!

I don't think anyone would eat THEIR dog...but how about evil dogs, like pitbulls and annoying dogs like poodels? Surely that is ok

Sorry mam, I don't see any difference morally between eating a dog and a baby cow or a baby sheep...

Some eat cats,

Some eat dogs

Some eat horses

Some eat frogs

I drink cow milk

and then eat its meat

A juicy sirloin

Is a US treat

I'm a barbarian

And what is even worse

I skin the bloody thing

To carry it as a purse.

How?? I guess like many other 4-legs animals. First, we slaughter them sometimes in barbaric ways like cutting throat or smashing head. Then, dress their flesh, prepare the cuts. Then, here we go, can eat raw tartar (like primitives) with peppers and salt or make different recipes for different meats. I personally like horse steak, as I'm a fking barbarian .

I hope you are vegetarian if you think like that. Me personally i wouldnt eat dog or cat because i only eat vegetarian animals. In addition i dont think i know anybody i switzerland that eats or ate cat or dog meat.

I've eaten bith dogs and cats during my travels.

Cat is very similar to rabbit, one of the main differences is one of them has round rib bones, the other flat rib bones, but taste wise almost impossible to tell the difference.

Dog however is like nothing else. It's a red meat, stronger then beef or horse, not as sweet as lamb. It needs to be cooked well, it can be stringy, especially if the dog was old. It's reputed that lighter coloured animals make better eating, but i think this maybe a myth.

As our so-said "civilisation" seems to think meat eating is a sign of prosperity and an acceptable thing to practice, then the actual form of the animal you eat becomes somewhat irrelvant.

There are cultural differennes and the Western civilisation prefer animals that have seen a farm during somepart of their brief lives, the East however do not worry so much about this and are quite happy to eat animals that are happy being city dwellers.

Which is more civilised, the West or the East....

I do, several in fact.

Tom

So you would condemn Korea, Phillipines, Vietnam, certain parts of Africa etc?

Me! Well, not here, but I had plenty of dog in my years in Haerbin. Never had a chance to try cat, as it's more a Guangzhou thing (Dragon tiger phoenix etc...). On the whole, I think the Koreans have better dog recipes than the Chinese - spicier and not as oily tasting.

I forgot China!

So we can probably class half the world's population as barbarians for eating "rover"

Don't forget Appenzeller!

I challenge you on that. If, after eating a cow, you can then eat even one cat, I will personally buy you a family bucket of KFC.*

* The 'C' stands for Chicken, in case you were wondering ...

Some practices might be strange for others. One man's meat ....

Family Pets allowed into the office? WHAAAAT??

Dogs in the office - common in CH?

Actually do most Chinese not live up to the stereotype. You will only find dog meat in the South where they generally eat everything and in the North where there is a strong ethinically Korean minority. When I wanted to try dog meat in Beijing did we therefore have to go to a Korean place. As other have mentioned before - Korean food is better in Korea.

P.S> Most Chinese girls would consider us to be babarians for eating something as lovely and fluffy as rabbits.

Gotta say I disagree on that, though of course not all Chinese eat dog (and fewer still eat cat), it's not just North and South by any means, and the North has it's own, non-Korean dog cuisine. You just have to know what to ask for.

About the rabbits... I went to a Sichuan hotpot place in Chengdu that specialized in chicken and rabbit - and you could pick your preferred meal. The boss's little daughter was sitting on the front step, petting a big, fluffy rabbit. He came out, grabbed it, put it on the scale, and disappeared out back to turn it into dinner for someone. She was unperturbed, grabbed another one from the hutches and went right back to petting.

That was a little disconcerting, but not as much as the chicken testicles and congealed blood with dinner.

i dont think i do

would you agree its a very small minority in switzerland actually eating dog meat?
