Is the UoP accredited in Switzerland Universities?

The University of the People is said to be, accredited and if you get your bachelors through their online-only program, you can pursue your masters in many Universities all around the world.

However, in Switzerland everything is strict, and I am not sure if it has the same value, or holds any minute advantage over other similar institution.

Looking at Wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_the_People

I doubt it.

If you want to do an online course which is accredited in Europe and the US then look at the Open University.

http://www.openuniversity.edu/

They also have courses in Switzerland. Just select Switzerland for your country and you’ll see what they have on offer here.

The UoP website says that as it is nationally accredited in the US by the DEAC its degrees may be recognised internationally.

Here the official list of all accredited (only 4!) and recognized universities according Swiss law which can.

https://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/...-institutions/

Only those can actually award academic titles and degrees on their own in Switzerland.

If your University is not on the list it has maybe an accretion from a foreign body. But you have to check who those body is, what reputation it has, what the accreditation actually covers and means, and if the university is actually accredited.

In addition, as all those institution which are not on the official list https://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/...-institutions/ can not legally award academic titles and degrees on their own they must have a partner University abroad which will award the degree in the end. This means you will have to do a background check on the reputation and legality of the partner university as well.

Finally, Swiss universities are mostly free who they take up into their master program. They normally have formal criteria you have to met to be accepted. Check for example what the ETH Zurich request: https://www.ethz.ch/en/studies/regis...equisites.html

Where it says:

Back to the UoP https://www.chea.org/university-people

which is accredited by DEAC https://www.chea.org/distance-educat...ing-commission

which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education https://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/ac...allyRecognized

Could potentially work.

PS: Go Land Crabs. If you know where this comes from you may also be aware that a future employer again is free in recognizing and accepting your degrees and certificates. If you don't, then Better Call Saul.

Thanks. I am accepted at the UoP, even if not accredited, I will continue to learn out of passion.

I checked the openuniveristy and I am actually chatting with them actually, and there is little assurance as for it's accreditation, and it is upto you to check beforehand which institution will accept your accomplishment as valid.

according to the chat:

And there are no words about courses in Switzerland. It is just a UK based online university, and I feel like it might be less accredited than the UoP

You need to change the location to Switzerland, then you’ll see the courses they offer here.

Wow, amazing answer and research. thanks.

The only 4 in the list are all swiss-based somehow. actually all the institutions are in switzerland. I guess that is not the best place to check if a foreign university diploma has any value here.

the best course of action would be to call/mail all the individual universities and ask in person if they can accept a student from UoP.

I have yet to see Better Call Saul, not sure if it is as good as breaking bad. I just checked, the ratings are still formidable, but the viewership is dwindling ... not sure which metric to lay my trust upon :/

It's more than "just" online. As it says in the info you found, it's as "proper " as a bricks and mortar university. Checking acceptance and accreditation is something you'd likely have to do for any course anyway, just to be on the safe side and I imagine it's on their paperwork as a bit of a catch-all disclaimer. The Open University was established over 40 years ago and is recognised in a lot of countries.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind about UoP though and just wanted confirmation.

Good luck with your studies.

Here is some official information on the topic: https://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/...on-swiss-enic/

In addition, there is a very simple way to check if you would be accepted in Switzerland with a diploma/degree from UoP: just call any of the recognized institutions on the homepage of swissuniversities that you would consider for a master's degree.

I'd recommand to contact only official / gov. bodies / recognized institutions to check about accreditation, admission to studies.

Institutions doing business with potential students will always tell that their degree is "recognized" worldwide...

Good luck with your studies

My daughter just graduated from the OU. They even have a proper ceremony (much better than the Swiss ones I've attended so far).

Universities can only award degrees in the UK if they have a royal charter. The OU has that - which is why it's as proper as any other university in the UK.

The value of any diploma foreign or domestic is the value your prospective university gives to the diploma and previous course work. The ETH is free to say that an under-grad from the MIT has to retake a certain number of undergrad courses at ETH to be admitted into its Master program.

Correct. But not all, only those you are interested in and actually offer further studies in your field.

It means at least the first few season seem to be what the viewership liked. You can always stop watching. Even mid season, because you think that is the point where the story should end.
