Is there a notification for vehicle inspections

I have a car registered in the Valais and am worried about missing inspections (mechanical and emissions). Does the VS send notifications? I can’t find the information on the VS website. Please advise.

I don’t know specifically for Valais but most cantons send out letters with appointments for the inspection when it’s due, Neuchâtel certainly does.
Some cantons have a backlog so it might be later than the required time but the car is legal until you are called in.

This time I had to wait 4 years instead of 2

The test does not have an expiry date, they write when they want to see your car, my record was 7 years but I know others were far longer. You can book a test if you wish to sell the car or have another reason to get it done ‘early’

I live in Valais. They send you a letter with a date - you can wait for years before they decide to call you, there doesn’t seem to be a set schedule.

There is a set schedule. They just usually fall behind it…

That’s only for the main control, for the emissions you have to organise it yourself on time

Since 2013, new cars with their own monitoring systems do not need a separate emissions test.

How many cars needs seperate emissions tests these days, not many I would think.

Only cars without an OBDII port sometimes referred as OBD2, they have been mandatory since 2003 in Europe but were fitted to many cars a few years before that. The US required them from 1996

Interesting - I have an older car but with an OBD2 port - I have always got the abgas test done every two years and they always looked at it during the MFK - is it the case that I don’t need an abgas test ?

Actually the port is (sort of) irrelevant - the requirement is for the car to have an (approved) on-board diagnostics system. You can see this in the car registration document, petrol cars should have an B03 or B04, diesel cars a B04, B05a or B05b entry. You are also required to follow the manufacturers service requirements which will include checking the OBD system.
