Is there an equivalent of Poundland (UK) in Switzerland?

Hi all,

I wonder, for those meaningless bits of shopping, is there any shop/market in Switzerland that could be equivalent at a Poundland (GBP1 - CHF1)?

Ta!

I have seen many so-called "2 fr. shops" over the years, but it may depend on the region. Also they slowly morphed into selling stuff for more than 2 fr becoming outlets for surplus stocks of household items, etc. I think as a model it failed pretty fast in Switzerland. And I see it's over in the UK as well https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/10384...-price-points/

I would suggest Otto's chain, seems the type of products is pretty similar to poundland and also works with low prices, manufacturer promotions, etc. They also have a section with products sold for 1 or 2 chf in every store.

If you order online I think many swiss use aliexpress, wish and ebay for small items.

I second Otto's.

If there are any near you Radikal is also a good place to look for stuff. Associated with Otto’s it seems since they have a lot of similar items.

Flying Tiger or Maxi Bazar also have similar concepts to Poundland.

Hope not

I find OTTO and Radikal pretty good, had some nice bargains in there. I buy things like pasta for putting in minestrone soup, only 1CHF! Also got a 6 place setting of white crockery including cups and saucers in OTTO for 19CHF

Some shopping centres have shops a bit like that tucked away in the less accessible (and hence presumably lower rent) areas. There used to be a place on the basement level of the Neumarkt in Oerlikon. Don't know if its still there though. Most of the stuff they had was tat, but some semi useful items did appear here and there.

its called 100chf land here

Otto's operating model (or at least one of them) is to buy up excess stock from other countries at knock down prices as the stock's sell buy-date is imminent (perhaps two months or so).

I've bought big tins of English chocolate and biscuits and other stuff in February which obviously was unsold Christmas stock in the U.K.

(obvious due to packaging, labelling language etc).

Otto are good for that sort of thing, and washing powder/liquid but for other stuff - a lot is, as others have said, complete tat. Rather like Poundland.

A bit less organised as a company. But most of those street shops the lower-income areas have the same kind of quality/content as those dollar shops.

Pound shops are a scourge on the retail market and generally sell Chinese crap of abominably bad quality. Often in the UK the food and sweets they sell isn't really much cheaper than regular supermarkets anyway.

Poorer towns in the UK have them springing up and closing down everywhere.

I lol'd...

Toblorone is still £1, based on weight it's one of the cheapest chocolate they sell.

Does anyone actually buy Toblerone? I see piles of it near the supermarket checkouts in Basel, but nobody ever seems to want it. I only ever buy the white one to take to my sister back in Scotland because she doesn't see it there.

When my sister lived in Saudi Arabia they had the equivalent of pound shops there, they were called 10 Riyal shops.

I suppose the other cheap Euro chain is Tedi Discount, I sometimes buy odd bits and pieces from the one in Weil Am Rhein at the Insel Centre.

I bought one last week.

The cashier at the garage couldn't open the till to give me change to get tokens for the car wash so I grabbed the nearest thing to buy to get change - a Toblerone.

I can't remember the last time I bought one though.

I've always thought that they are the kind of thing other people buy at airport duty free along with giant packets of M and Ms.

I don't like the hurty way it gets stuck between your teeth tbh

Surprised you didn't offer to repair the till

It's more of a security thing.

Take it out of the cardboard tube first?
