Is there any inexpensive way to go from Winterthur to Konstanz?

I am planning to go to Konstanz from Winterthur on Saturday to do some shopping. However, I don't have a car and by train it costs around 46 CHF round trip per adult. We are 4 adults and 1 child (8 years old). There is a bus (flixbus) from Zürich which costs 8 EUR each way, however adding the train ticket from Winterthur to Zürich (13 CHF each way) makes it almost as expensive as going directly from Winterthur by train. Does anyone know a cheaper / convenient way to go to Konstanz from Winterthur?

If you're gonna do this regularly just buy a cheap used car. You'll need big cargo room for your groceries anyway

Hitchhike.

Motorcycles and bicycles are another option.

Also, buy 1/2 ABOS.

Definitely the cheapest

ok.. more seriously, you don't have a Half Tax card?

For this Saturday - probably not.

If you book further in advance you can get a "Sparbillet" from the SBB site, basically limited numbers restricted to specific trains at a discount.

At 200 CHF return you're may be in range of an Uber being comparable though.

I drive from Winterthur to Konstanz to shop regularly. Huge savings. More than offsets the fuel costs.

Interesting, fuel costs to Italy are not offset by shopping there.

Possibly dependent on distance traveled, frequency of travel and whatever it is one buys.

Rent a Mobility car for the day?

We are 15km from the border.

We only shop in Italy when we go there for other reasons.

Going there just to shop generally isn't worth it.

For the price of only a few such rides you can just outright BUY your own car, Maybe even with fresh mfk if you're lucky. Nothing fancy, of course, i think even a working airco probably would too much to ask for in this range, but it'd get you from point A to point B. Hopefully without breaking too often. Gas is cheap. Obligatory insurance maybe 300-400 Fr, parking in the blue zones seems to be 50 Fr/year in Winterthur. No worries about depreciation

According to the calculator at the mobility website, the costs are:

Combi: 14CHF(5 hours)+29.14(47km) = 49.84CHF

Budget: 14CHF(5 hours) + 23.5CHF(47km) = 37.50CHF

That's just for one way, you need to double it. Don't forget about annual charges. Quite a rip off no matter how you look at it. Only reasonable for short city trips and occasional flat move
