I am having a surprisingly difficult time finding Italian Fontina Cheese here in the Lausanne area. I will buy online if I can find a place that handles this cheese.
Have done many google searches, but only find shops in the USA that have this cheese for sale online.
Go to COOP and try out the "Fontal" cheese. From the research I did previously, it is supposed to be similar to Fontina. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison so I have no idea. However, it is very good in Polenta Fonduta.
Fontal is not the same, tastes similar but melts differently from real fontina (string-like, not smoothly), so DO NOT attempt to make a piedmont fondue.
Otherwise, it is quite acceptable, if layered in polenta, or used to make chicken cordon bleu.
I think i've seen real fontina occasionally at the large coop down At the Leman Centre.... I would try to ask there.
Otherwise... aosta is only a couple of hours away...
Thanks for looking in and for your advice about finding the elusive Italian Fontina cheese. The COOP Leman Centre is conveniently accessible, so I will try there. Actually I prefer this cheese on homemade pizza - melts nicely and has more flavor than mozarella.
Give Padula a call (021 653 95 08) - they have an online order business for cheese and other Italian foodstuff, and also operate a market stall in the Lausanne area (or pick up at their warehouse in Crissier).
