Our local weir now has a blue algae warning sign posted, and there have been articles about similar algae blooms appearing in various Swiss lakes and ponds. (Hallwiller See comes to mind.) Apparently conditions are right for algae blooms this year.
So a PSA for dog owners who walk in or by non-running bodies of water:
Incidents of algae blooms are usually reported on your cantonal or Gemeinde website. Before you head out, check your to see if Blue algae has been reported in your walking area. If so, do not - under any circumstance - allow your dog to go in the water or drink the water. If your dog has contact with water where blue algae is present, call the vet ASAP. Contact with blue algae could be life-threatening.
Keep your pups - and children, and yourselves of course - safe as you enjoy your walks.
