I'm looking to have some jewelry appraised in Zurich and looking for a recommendation on where to do it. I've done it before in the US, but it was a reputable company that was specifically for valuing/appraisal and dealing. I'm wondering if anyone here has just walked into a nice jewelry store here and had it done.
Thanks!
Yes, I walked into
Les Ambassadeurs on Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich, some years ago and asked them to value some stones I had lying around.
They were very friendly and competent. It can be expensive, though - what a surprise.
What is the valuation for? Probate, Sale or insurance, you will get 3 very different no's!
Aha - good point! Just for private sale.
Thank you! I didn't want to just walk in to a place and they look at me like I'm nuts for asking. Expensive though... hmmm... are we talking like 100 chf for a quote on a piece or more?? Yikes!
Could be - but it doesn't cost to ask at least. If I remember correctly, the first answer was that they charge a certain percentage of the value.
I paid about CHF 400.00 a good 10 years ago for them to sort and value a bag of stones. This sounds a little wierd, but my Grandad was a jeweller/watchmaker and when he passed my Gran gave me his tools and bits and pieces, which were quite messed up. I needed to know what was the real thing and what not. They offered me a deal, basically saying if I gave them enough time, they would do it at a special price I don't regret it, though, it was worth the price to have them all sorted out, labelled and valued. Not that the value was very high in the end. The main thing was that I knew I would get every stone back again.
I walked in there wearing jeans and was treated as a normal customer, so that in itself is worth a recommendation
Ask them how much they would give you cash, then add 20%! Insurance value probably twice what you will get.
The insurance value is always higher then what you will be able to sell it for,
but most stores on Bahnhofstr. will do it though i wouldt pay more then 70 CHf a piece and def. not if your your doing a whole bunch of things,
If you are looking for diamonds there is a diamond office on Bahnhofstr in like the 4th floor, not sure what exact address they only deal in Diamonds and are very professional.
All very good information. Thank you so much!
Just a bit of follow-up. I went in to Les Ambassadeurs for a quote. They were very friendly, but they said it would be 200 chf and 2 weeks to have one item (ring) of jewelry appraised. So they will do it there, but I will continue my search in hope of a lower price.
Just ask how much they will give you in cash, then you have a bid & can work from that.
hi people, i called Les Ambassadeurs to ask for my jewellery to be valued - they told me that they can only value jewellery that have been purchased from Switzerland - jewellery from anywhere else in the world they simply cannot value.
only Guebelin does valuing of jewellery - http://www.guebelin.ch
it costs between 250-300CHF for one item (so if you have necklace, earrings and bracelet, then it'll be approx CHF 900! for valuing) - plus you have to leave the jewellery with them for 3 weeks!
i'd rather just shop for more jewellery!
