Job without native language

Hello,

I am new here, I would like to ask, about the job in switzerland. My problem is that i know only english, and i read, that would be problem to get a job only with english. I have University diplom from Management, so I can work in Administrative, or i study on high school as a bartender or waiter. Is there any option to get a job with only english and these skills? A would really love to go to switzerland. Thanks for answers.

Highly unlikely is the polite answer but good luck to you.

Why do you think?

You are competing against people who have Swiss degrees, who are fluent in English, German, French, who have university degrees etc etc etc

You need something to make you stand out from the crowd.

So what are your skills?

Picture yourself working in your own country, with only English? In which job could you make a living, and which profession would pay you to work for them?

The only job I can think of is an assistant English teacher. All other jobs require you to understand the local language.

After you have a good qualification in German, French or Italian, we can help you further. We all had to learn the local language, so with no time to loose, try and start learning a Swiss language tomorrow!

Seriously, s/he has a A2 level of English. I do not see how one can offer to teach anyone how to speak English.

I think Sbrinz was being kind and offering a solution for the future

Bartender/waiter would be more difficult than admin work in a big, international pharamacy company - because a bartender/waiter needs to understand what the clients are asking for.

It is possible, but most English only jobs are for high level positions. Even admin work will probably require you to know at least one Swiss language fluently. Most international companies will use English, but also a Swiss language so most documentation will be in both languages. If you can’t work in one, you’re unlikely to land a job with the other.

At this link is a comprehensive list of job boards in Switzerland:

As an example, search on the job board indeed.ch using the keyword "English" (also add a location such as Zürich to limit the number of returns).

The NZZ, a German language newspaper, posts jobs requiring English at this link. These are for mostly highly qualified job-seekers:

Many Portuguese and some other nationalities work on building sites in Switzerland in their native language. Possibly there are also Slovak/ Czech construction crews where you could hire on.

It might be possible to find kitchen, cleaning and other jobs in the hotel/ restaurant industry where English skills would allow you to find (seasonal) work.

Good luck to you!

With no knowledge of any local language and English skills that are - based on the above post - not fluent, I don't really see many options. That includes bartending jobs - cause in what language would you take orders or receive instructions from your managers?

Switzerland overall has a high-skilled labor market that is also very competitive. Well you might be able to find work as as a dishwasher or cleaner, but I would venture to guess that you can achieve more in your home country in a job that is semi-related to your background instead of trying to go for a low-skilled job just because it's in Switzerland.

Why Switzerland anyway?

I don't know what a degree in "Management" is or what that entails, but would assume you would have a very, very hard time competing with the plethora of Swiss that are educated to degree level PLUS speak several languages including of course the local one.

English-only jobs do exist, but hey are quite rare and restricted mainly to large MNCs (which are difficult to get into anyway). They are also on a very senior level and usually require excellent English.

Although I read that you have a University qualification in management... it is hard to know whether this would be acknowledged in Switzerland and, sadly, it probably would not be.

Therefore, dven though you do have a qualification, you might find some useful ideas in this long thread: where to look for jobs with no job qualifications

As long you have the right skill set for your job and it's at a global company you should be perfectly fine with 'just' English as a language in my humble opinion.

Wish you good luck!!
