Juice fasting

Hello,

I just saw an article about juice fasting. I never done it but I am curious to know more about it. My friends's mother is very into it and does it once a month.

Any juice faster here to share experiences, tips and opinions?

Thanks.

What type of juice - fruit juice? If so, then you're basically spending one day a month just drinking sugar with some vitamins. Can't see it doing any harm, but not sure what benefits it offers either, due to the high sugar content. Better to spend the day *eating* fruit imo. But I'm a smoothie fan, so understand the appeal

sounds pretty unhealthy due to sugar content. maybe it should be called the "attempt to induce diabetes" diet.

Well I guess it would be more of a vegetable juice fasting? That's why I am asking.

What AL says - its very high sugar without any of the other benefits ie fibre etc. If you do it, use lots of veggies to lower the sugar hit esp cucumber

If you can entice Vegan Chef back, I seem to recall that nutritious juicy things were one of his specialities.

Maybe you could go back through some of his old posts and see what he had to say?

How does one entice a vegan?

He was undoubtedly a strong advocate, but always seemed to run from the science behind his philosophy. I'm sure he'd give great recipes, but I'm not sure I'd seek his advice from a "Is it a good idea" point of view

I used to home juice carrots and such. Like other people have said, it's a lot of sugar, but as part of an otherwise healthy diet I don't see how it could hurt. It's certainly got to be better for you than coffee or redbull or whatever.

If you're talking about nothing but juice for a day or two to lose weight, I guess it's better than fasting, But if it were me, I don't think that I could stick with it.

I usually don't eat breakfast, but I do drink a lot of coffee. As part of a health kick a few years ago, I shifted over from morning coffee to a big glass of veg juice, and after I got over the withdrawal headaches, I felt like I actually did have more energy overall. Might have been the placebo effect, though.

Unfortunately, I went back to a schedule that had me rolling out of bed at 0400 and soon found myself right back on the coffee kick.

I do a juice "detox" every so often , thou i have my fruit smoothie (with spinach some other green) every morning. The veggie juice gives a break to your digestive system, so the pulp would slow down that process.Def. no fruit juice and most be freshly juiced veggie as well, nutrients start breaking down after 1 hr..

Day one i would do only juice, beets are really good for cleaning the liver, so is celery and cucumber. I always add carrots and apples to sweeten the juice a bit..

Day 2 i add the pulp back and will have soups and/or salads.

Day 3 i eat my regular vegetarian diet and try to keep eating as healthy as possible..

Anyday soon after i am in a pub enjoying beer and a poutine!

My mother lived 10yrs without her stomach, she had stomach cancer the doc. gave her 3 yrs max..She survived on veggie juices!

You won't lose weight. The body could freak out and store more fat. As a detox I suspect you're much better off fasting. Filling yourself with pureed fruit or veg doesn't give the body much of a digestive rest. But I don't see it doing any harm; plus if your diet is shit the rest of the time, at least for one day a month you're loading up with vitamins (which the body doesn't store, so you'll be back to none the next day!).

As a detox I suspect you're better off doing nothing. The whole concept of 'toxins' needing removal is based on wooly thinking, not medicine.

If you lead an unhealthy lifestyle, smoke too much, drink too much, eat too much and don't do enough exercise (or any perm of the above) going for a couple of days, or weeks, on some change of diet may have a temporary effect on the body, particularly if you drop calorific intake dramatically, but won't make any difference after that limited period if you don't address the underlying issues you're just fooling yourself really.

what happened to that guy? off cooking for the stars somewhere? i was away for a few months....

I dont juice fast, but i swear i can feel the vitamin absorbtion into my bloodstream after drinking certain types of juice. After a serious all day grueling workout (like 150km on a 50 kg bike, or a mountaineering summit day), my body would crave just one thing: beet juice. Its loaded with sugar, however.

I'd use a carrot and carrot approach.

No, that'll be the sugar.

I've never done any fasting, but my mother used to do "Heilfasten" - therapeutic fasting.

It had sort of a rough start with taking sodium sulfate (ahem), but it did help a lot.

Sadly, she developed some sort of epilepsy from it, so she can't do it anymore - it had helped her arthritis a lot back then.

If I needed to lose weight and had the cash to spend, I'd probably pay a visit to them: http://www.buchinger.com/en/welcome-to-buchinger.html

Because very low calorie-diets really need some sort of medical supervision, which admittedly, I only realized after my mother told me after her "incident"...

Or, y'know, Google. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ju...eCH443&qscrl=1

I hope Nil learns the intricacies of search engines to research basic info some day.

Well I do. But that's not what I asked, isn't it? I asked about feedback and tips from people of this forum who know and have been doing it.

You also said you were curious to know more about it, and if you are really talking about true juice 'fasting' then it pays to do proper research, because it's not something to take lightly, and the effects on the body can be quite dramatic.

And I also said that I am reading about it. And I want to get feedback. go argue with someone else, jeez.

I have done a bit of "fasting" but that's mainly since I didn't have time to worry about food. I wouldn't call a day on liquids fasting at all, in fact.

I think sucking on candy the entire day and not eating will probably have the same effect as fruit juices.

Eating fruits is beneficial, I was a fruitarian for some periods of time, it is energizing until you run out of breath, can't do it for long. Eat fruits 3-5 days, then normal diet for 2 months, with restricted portions and a lot of exercise, that will have an effect. Then repeat.

But I agree with what Adrian said, it is by no means light on your digestion. If you want light food and not high on cals (but also quite low on nutrition), eat small portions of light protein, super lean ham, half a slice of white toast bread, chicken buillon, etc.

Mostly, you can pick light food. Or nutritious food. Or vit loaded food. But to meet all those criteria, it's a pretty sophisticated mix. The safest is to eat a little more than your kids, and as often. Small portions of balance diet and frequent will result in weight loss. Anything drastic will be efficient in the beginning, but will make you yo yo.

Do be very careful too, if you have any medical condition or take any medicines, that could affect the way your body reacts.
