Kale - easy to find?

Hi Vanessa,

The kale seeds you gave me are now a nice patch of kale in our community garden! So in a while you can come and get some :-))

I know that you know by now, but for the other readers: in the season it will be available again at the bioland stand on Marktplatz. Also the farmers vegetable shop in Biel-Benken sells it, Kirchgasse 5

Are there any Zürich stores selling kale? If I could find some kale, I would shred it into a pan of frying bacon and put on a lid and let it cook with some cayenne pepper and a bit of soy sauce. Delicious.

Answer is for sure already in this thread...as well as others... Quick answer: Kale is not yet in season - wait until November. Black Kale (Tuscan Kale or Cavalo Nero) is now available at the markets in Oerlikon and Helvetiaplatz...

Good luck...

Jack

Thanks, I didn't know Helvetiaplatz market, I will try it. There's an odd lack of dark leafy greens at Coop apart from spinach leaves in those inert gas type bags.

Paul.

But go to the Portuguese stores (I feel like a broken record ). They bring it in from Portugal pretty much year round. You have to go early in the morning and usually on Sat. I can't believe I'm giving away the secret!

Thanks miniMia. I could not google any Portuguese stores in Zürich though.

There are some listed here on EF, IIRC.

I am missing Kale...so far I have only found it during October at the Oerlikon Markt... is there anywhere else to get it, and is it even available here now? Cavallo Nero (dinosaur kale) would so rock my boat right now :-)

Go to your local vegetable market, if you don't see any ask for it, they usually are happy to bring some for you a week later.

Hi all,

Still searching for The Holy Kale in der Schweiz.

But I require it fresh and organic for juicing tho (yum!).

Anyone got any tips for a possible source in the ZH-see area??

TIA

Tia,

Kale is simple to find in Zürich, but you need to look outside the major supermarkets. Try going to the market (Wed and Sat in Oerlikon, Tue and Fri at Helvetiaplatz or Bürkliplatz). Most vendors have it right now, but the season is winding down and the quality is beginning to suffer a bit. Black kale is also widely available. Kale is NOT available in Switzerland during the entire year, but only a period of time from October until about the end of January. Try other greens for your juices...

Awesome sauce. I shall do my best to get up early tomorrow and go check em out then.

Thanks!

Everyone keeps saying that Kale isn't available in the major supermarkets. This isn't true. From about November to a week ago, I was finding it in the Migros in Glattzentrum and in Globus (2 CHF more expensive per kilo). However I'm already craving some for my juicing so I'll try the Oerlikon market this weekend and see what's available.

This shop in Winterthur always has it.

After all this talk, I went to the Oerlikon market this past Saturday. And sure enough, they had Kale everywhere (both curly and dinosaur). It costs about 1 CHF per 100g and it's very fresh. Unfortunately I asked the season and they informed me it will only be for another 2 weeks. So stock up while you can!

Ok, cheers for the further tips - good to know I still have a slim chance...

I went to the Helvetiaplatzmarkt and Globus last Friday and according to them das Federkohlsaison ist schon vorbei .

I had very good kale salad at Tibits today.

If you have a small garden patch you could grow it (even in pots) for next winter. I planted one 2 years ago around May and the plant grew real tall and leafy and has lasted 2 years!

I also look for it in Zurich, to no avail. I just go to Jestetten ( a german exclave) or Lake Constance for shopping this and several other stuff I only get in Germany!!
